Hi everyone,
You may have seen the Community team have started a ‘What do you wish you had known’ blog series where we ask Community members with different lived experiences what they wish they had known, in the hope this may be helpful to others on a similar journey.
In the latest of our new series of blogs sharing hints and tips from members, we are asking:
"What do you wish you had known before you had surgery?"
This could include questions you might want to ask, practical tips or help with anxiety when approaching appointments and some reassuring messages for someone who may be about to have the same surgery as you.
We will be featuring some of your suggestions in an upcoming Community News Blog, but this thread will remain as a resource for anyone who needs it.
Thank you in advance for sharing your experience and support. If you have any questions, would like to be a guest blogger to share your individual story, or need additional support, please email community@macmillan.org.uk and we will be happy to help.

I have come back on after having lumpectomy 8 weeks ago I never thought about how it would affect the way Ii feel. Feel low head still feels mashed up, frightened incase it comes back every time I feel a lump anywhere frightened just incase,
Yes, a difficult, shocking and frightning thing for everyone.no matter the cancel.
Some days ok, others up and down for my Cruella , my anti ego.
My family and close friends have wistned or just sent messages. I feel for one stange reason feeling a different to Cruella!
Tuesday is next chalange the specianist to discuss Cruella.
Some days comunication is OK others II cannot words or understand what something says, although i understand what it is about. It just takes longer and using tech to help.
Hope you feel a litter better today.
I had a mixed day as although a lovely someway way with family I had to pace myself.
I had my surgery on Monday, day 5 post op now.
I wish I had been told I need to inject myself with blood thinners for 26 days. I hate needles! Does anyone know why for so long, I am moving around well now.
i know how you feel about the blood thinners i had to do it for 6 weeks but i had broke my ankle had a plate and screw and was in a cast and some told me they got tablets instead of injection wish i had known that i would have opted for the tablets
I had to take them for 28 days, twice a day. I’ve had them on previous operations but not so long. The only difference I can say is this time I didn’t wear DVT socks so maybe why the period is longer ?? Not sure.
Gosh, lucky them! I would much prefer a tablet!
Twice a day, I am feeling not so hard done by now!
