Looking for ideas to protect under breast skin to prevent another episode of cellulitis after a routine mammogram.
Post radiotherapy, my skin under breast is fragile like puff pastry. It fractures easily if hot/sweaty so always look after it.
But last year during mammogram, the radiologist really stretched my breast to get the scan. I told them how badly it hurt but carried on regardless.
The next day I had an open wound the whole length of my breast underneath and it got infected. It led to cellulitis up my shoulder, around my back and I was almost hospitalised.
So I’m looking for ideas to prevent this happening in a month’s time when I go for my next mammogram. I can’t wear barrier cream on the day but thinking of Hydromol/similar in advance. I’ve asked my Breast Nurse but she said “just tell the radiographer”.
Thank you.
Hi Blackhall and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and I had treatment for breast cancer 3 years ago. Fortunately, I don't have any problems having a mammogram but it sounds like you had a very unpleasant experience last time.
As you know, the online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the breast cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others who can share their experiences with you.
To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
Whatever cancer throws your way, we’re right there with you.
We’re here to provide physical, financial and emotional support.
