Hi
My dad (77yrs) has been diagnosed with bowel cancer again. Last time was 20 years ago.
He had surgery yesterday to remove rest of his bowel and intestine... Now has a stoma.
Surgeon found cancer on his bladder and stomach. Said they'd removed what they could.
I'm in a bit of bewilderment.
What will this mean for his treatment? With just the bowel there wasn't to be any chemo, but now?
What should I ask the consultant? What should I prepare for to help him?
Dad's very much "oh just let them get on with it" but I need to be prepared.....there's only me, my mum has advanced dementia (residential care).
Appreciate any advice.
Hello CRLL,
I'm very sorry that your dad has suffered recurrence of his bowel cancer and that the result of his operation means it's likely he will need further treatment.
Although his doctors are probably pretty sure what they're dealing with I think they'll need to do some tests to confirm before they can decide exactly what type of treatment is needed, such as chemo, and hopefully they can complete this quickly for you.
In the meantime it might be useful if you'd like to post this on the bowel cancer forum to see if anyone on there has had a a similar experience and can shed some light on their treatment options. I've inserted a link to this below.
I wish your dad and you all the best,
Derek.
