Hi all .
my mum  has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and is to start chemo , this may sound totally selfish but I work full time and work extra shifts I will be looking after my mum for the foreseeable as I don’t know how she will respond to the treatment , she doesn’t not wish to come and live with me ( I have young children and they make a lot of noise )so I’ve decided that when she is having her treatment I’ll be staying at her house to care for her untill she feels ok ( ish) so as I work extra shifts I won’t be able to when I’m looking after mum  and we rely on the extra shifts  that I do. I work full time and I’m not sure if there is a carers allowance, I feel guilty writing it as I know the pot of money is almost empty but I can’t leave mum but I need to feed my family . Please understand . What options are there and is everything means tested ?

  • Firstly don't feel guilty, you are dealing with not only your emotions with what your Mum is going through but you are also trying to do the best by Mum (yes I've been there).

Try calling the Macmillan Money advisor number 0808 808 00 00 (8am-6pm). got from this website.
I've called them when I was caring for my Mum & they are really helpful. Plus for me in more recent years.
    Good luck

  • Thank you ,

I will give them a call . I hope you are ok .
