Alone at night and worrying

  • I used an app on my phone called Headspace, just the free version which was available at the time. It teaches techniques like Mindfulness which is all about living in the moment and focusing on what is happening right then, breathing exercises to help keep you calm and not let your mind run away with negative thoughts. I also found a few different apps with calming sounds, like the noise of the ocean, which helped me calm down to get to sleep.

I’m a member of the bowel group, and I know the members are very helpful there. If you’d like to join the group, you just need to click on this link I’ve made here

    Bowel Cancer Forum

When the page opens, there is a banner across the bottom which you can click to join the group and then you’d be able to put a new post up and introduce yourself. It might help you to share your worries and there will be plenty of support for you so you don’t have to go through this alone.

Cancer is very scary for us, especially when we’re first diagnosed, but I know I find it helpful to talk to others who understand how you’re feeling. You can also phone the Macmillan support line-I’ve done this myself-and there are people to help. The number is in my signature and the line is available for 8am to 8pm every day. They are lovely, so don’t ba scared to pick up the phone and give them a ring.

  • Thanks for all that Sarah. I will join the bowel group. The consultant says he thinks the cancer found is early stage and all my blood work came back fine. I hope this is all good news. I will not try and have some shut eye but the morning is well underway. Hope to speak with you again. Still shaking!!!

  • The earlier cancer is found, the easier it is to treat and bowel cancer can be notoriously slow growing, with lots of treatment options so try to focus on the positive things and what you know right now-not anything that might happen in the future. The best thing I can advise is to take one day at a time, one appointment at a time, and I hope you can get some sleep now.
