understanding the medical terms

my Mother was diagnosed with lower left lobe lug cancer in Nov 22 and no treatment is available for as the consultant didn't think she was strong enough to face this at her age (81 now)

she's had a slow decline since and also now has a AWI (Adult with incapacity)in place  , she had a 3 month stay in hospital and was discharged on Thursday ,whilst in hospital we found it very difficult to make meaningful contact with the consultant to get a clear understanding of what's going on and where she's at

her discharge letter includes the most detail ive been told but unfortunately i struggle with the detail

"is known to have significant progression of left lower lobe lung cancer with static mediastinal lymphadenopathy and marked emphysematous changes"

i know from a recent scan that her cancer has doubled in size since Nov 22 and no cancer on the brain was seen , she hast lost roughly 4 stone in this time and now has a lot of confusion and needs 24hr care in the house .can any offer any insight into her discharge letter detail

many thanks

  • Hi  and welcome to the Macmillan Community but so sorry to hear about your mothers diagnosis.

A cancer diagnosis like this in the family can be such a challenging and stressful time, I have a completely different incurable cancer so can’t help with the terms….. but getting support from others who are dealing with the ‘exact same' support challenges can help you a lot.

As you see the Community is actually divided into dedicated Support Groups (Discussion Rooms) and when it comes to the practical and emotional challenges of supporting your mother and indeed yourself you may benefit from joining and posting in our

    Carers only

    Supporting someone with incurable cancer

……. support groups where you will connect with a wide range of members navigating the exact same support challenges.

To connect with a group click on the “Bold Italic Links” I have created above …… then once the group page opens click in the [ Black - Click to Join - Banner ] that appears at the bottom of the page and this will then confirm that you have joined the group.

When you are ready……. you can introduce yourself by putting up your very own post by clicking [ + Create new post] or [ + ] in the top right of the group page.

You can copy and paste the text from this post into your new post.

You may find it helpful to call the Macmillan Support Line open 8am-8pm (timings may differ across services) 7 days a week on 0808 808 00 00. This service provides cancer information, practical information, emotional support, benefits/financial guidance or just a listening ear.

We also have our Ask an Expert section but do allow 3 working days for a reply.

  • Thanks Eddie ,that gives me more insight tbh , we kind of left the hospital without much info

  • Does this mean the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes

  • Hi Seamus,, when I took my mum home from hospital I was  given no information only mums cancer was untreatable and she had 4 months to live, I had one visit by the nurses 3 days before we lost her. Things are better now there is support for you both, I would suggest you access it soon it will help you both, best wishes.
