Can I just ask what a community champion is and what do they do. Sorry,I’m new here so unsure.

  • Hello

A warm welcome to the Online Community . I am the "latest appointment" as a Community Champion. We are all volunteers who have chosen to put something back into the online Community as we have all used the Community in the past on our own personal cancer journey and found it to be helpful.

We have all undertaken some training from Macmillan and we are the link if you like between the Community members and the full time staff. We help new Community members in navigating the site and try and help Community members keep to the Community Guidelines .We do move about the site but tend to stick to our own cancer forums. You find me most of the time on the Prostate cancer forum but I do appear elsewhere.

The link below should give you an idea.

A big thank you to our Community Champions - volunteering on the Online Community

You can read my own personal cancer journey by clicking on my avatar.

If I can do anything to help you please let me know,

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hi Brian. Thank you so much for all that information. It’s very helpful to me and others I’m sure. I’m currently having a little wobble as I have my first oncology appt tomorrow. I’m not going to lie,I’m scared.

  • Hello again

I know it's easy for me to say - but just treat it as a normal appointment. Make some notes as to what questions you need to ask and take notes as to what the oncologist says. Make sure a copy of the meeting notes are sent to you along with the GP - Take someone with you for support if you can.

Just looking at your profile I would advise you to join the Breast cancer forum . You can do this by clicking on the link I have provided. Once the page opens up you can click on "join" on the black banner at the bottom of the page and then introduce yourself by clicking on the +new.

You will find lots of support there from people who have walked and are walking the same or similar path as you are embarking on.

Good luck tomorrow - you will be fine once you get into the meeting - remember the Oncologist is there to help.

If I can be of any further help - just let me know.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hello Brian. There was so much information to take on board that I feel my head is still spinning. I’ll be having 16 weeks of chemo and then radiotherapy six weeks after and hormone treatment. Hearing it all out loud was hard but if I’m going to beat this then it’s got to happen. Your support has been amazing so thank you.

    Best wishes

  • Hello   That's great you have a treatment path and with your positive attitude you will sail through it. There will always be the odd "dark day" but there's always the Community to come back to - there's always someone here to listen or share experiences with.

The mention of "hormone treatment" always make me smile. I am on 3 years Hormone Therapy for prostate cancer. In a nutshell our cancer lives on testosterone - if you have no testosterone the cancer dies - so you have hormone therapy - I have grown a pair of "moobs", have hot flushes, can be moody, and no action in the bedroom - however it's curative treatment - and I can laugh about it.  My girls want me to go clothes shopping with them at Next - but there's a limit!!!

Keep the positive attitude - that's half the battle.

    Best wishes - Brian.

  • Hello Brian. Thank you for making me chuckle. So that’s a no for shopping thenJoy. Oh dear,to feel like a woman eh? I was having flushes before hormone treatment so god knows what I’ll be like. But at the end of the day,I’ll still be alive. The support here is amazing.

    Take care Brian
