I have stage 4 metastatic cancer inoperable and not curable. Will I be entitled to any benefits? I start treatment 2nd June.

  • Thank you so much and you are right. I’m of state pension age and live in Scotland so think the rules are different here . I will look into it it’s just a thought.

  • I think it’s best to speak to the Macmillan team first Cath, as they will guide you as to what you might be eligible for. It’s really hard to know where to start otherwise.

  • I agree Sarah it’s best to have some guidance.I had to fight to get mum her nursing care allowance. She was totally bedbound and had to be fed, washed etc and still the nursing home didn’t think she would qualify.I decided to apply for it and got it so at least there was extra money for mum in her last few months.Love Jane x

  • It’s awful to have to fight for things Jane, whether in a caring or patient situation. It can seem unnecessarily complex if you don’t know the system, but I’m glad you managed to get this for your mum. I’ve worked and paid into the system since leaving university, so I don’t have any issue with claiming for help now when I really need it.

  • It is awful that we have to fight and everything is so complicated.I spent so long on the phone to the DWP over mum’s other benefits. Each time she went into hospital I had to inform them it was a nightmare.I miss mum but I don’t miss any of those headaches. The on line system was so stressful it was easier to phone and eventually speak to someone.I think life is more complicated these days.Technology is fine when it works but when it crashes everything grinds to a halt.xx

  • In England the attendance allowance is for pensioners. You might have the same. I have a life time award at higher rate.

  • Thank you it’s a bit confusing. I don’t think I want to claim anything that’s means tested.

    Cath

  • AA is not means tested.

  • Is that Attendance Allowance?

    Cath

  • Yes. Age concern and other charities have experts who can help with paperwork.
