My dad has been poorly for a couple of months and had a perforated bowel 4 weeks ago. He hasn't recovered from the operation as expected and his intestines are not working as they should. He is being fed via TPN and has an ng tube in place to drain contents of his stomach. He was told yesterday that the biopsy on the piece of bowel that was removed is back and it shows secondary cancer cells with the primary being somewhere in the urinary system. The drs are as surprised as we are as he has had scans, scopes and tests on almost everything over the past 2 months and nothing has shown up! We just don't understand how we have got to this stage so quickly. They have told us the urologists will have an MDT meeting next week to discuss what happens next. What should we expect and how do we make sure we get all the answers we need. My dad isn't great with medical things and he isn't able to ask the questions or understand what they are telling him fully as he is just so side swiped by this news!
Hi Sheepy697 and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I'm sorry to read that your dad has recently been diagnosed with secondary cancer cells in his bowel and I know what a worrying time this will be for you.
As you know, the online community is divided up into different support groups so I hope you don't mind me suggesting that you also join the bladder cancer and bowel cancer groups as you'll then connect directly with others who can hopefully share their experiences of what might happen next for your dad in the way of treatment, tests, etc.
If this is something that you'd like to do, clicking on the links I've created will take you directly to the groups where you can join and start a new post in the same way as you did here. You can also join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
It would be great if you could pop something about your dad's diagnosis and tests so far into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
This link will take you to a blog which explains how to get the best out of the online community but if you have any difficulty navigating the community just drop me a reply and I'll be pleased to help
x
Thank you for your response. I wasn't sure what forum to go to as I wasn't sure what cancer he actually has. It's irrelevant now as he has been told this evening it is an aggressive untreatable cancer and it is palliative care only to keep him comfortable. I guess I need to move over to a forum that supports woth terminal diagnoses. Thank you again x
Oh, I'm really sorry to read that Sheepy697. It must have come as a tremendous shock to you both.
I can see that you've already found and joined the supporting someone with incurable cancer group and I hope you'll find that a supportive place to be.
Sending a virtual (((hug)))
