So, I don't know about anyone else, but I've put on a lot of weight since diagnosis. And actually, when I look back then I was definitely slowing down before diagnosis and weight was slowly increasing, but nowhere near as fast as it has done since treatment began.

My weight gain hasn't been caused by steroids as is often the case with cancer, but instead it is a combination of bone mets reducing mobility, thyroxine making me hyperactive, and PCOS doing it's thing. So right now, I am just a sliver over 21 stone and 5'10". Two and a half weeks ago I was closer to 22 stone, which is where I decided enough was enough and something needed to change. That was also when I discovered that my womb cancer was oestrogen receptor positive, which meant that the excess fat was producing oestrogen and making the womb cancer worse and harder to suppress. That, was the main drive for the weight loss because there was no way I was going to let my cancer get worse if I could help it.

I also figured that there are probably other people out there in similar situations, where their 'new normal' has meant that they have put on a few pounds they don't want. And, as this website is all about support, then why didn't we band together and help each other lose weight?! An online and free weight watchers/Slimmers world/whoever else, where we share tips and tricks, products that we find that are healthy alternatives, and help track weightloss and cheer each other on.

So if you feel like trying to lose some weight with others, then please do jump on in. All shapes and sizes welcome!

I think that we should be somewhat wary of accepting that Anastrazole, Letrazole or similar will automatically mean weight gain. On the leaflet it says that weight gain is a possibility, not a given. Also, those contributing to forum discussions re weight gain on these medications are of course the ones who have gained weight and not the people who haven't. I'm talking to myself here as much as anything (I'm on Letrozole) - don't accept weight gain as inevitable or use taking the tablet as an 'excuse' for weight gain when there may well be a number of things one is doing wrong on the diet/exercise front which at the very least don't help. The one person I know on Anastrazole is as slim as a pin and always was so may not be inclined to gain weight. On the other hand, I call her 'Mrs Nippy' because she nips here there and everywhere and sometimes makes 20,000 steps per day just by being 'her'. She also eats healthily and moderately.

    Hi

I am awaiting a second breast biopsy and because of an infection and hematoma from the first this has been delayed until 9 April.

Was losing weight with Slimming World but have had to put that on hold until I get either an all clear or a diagnosis

I cannot stop eating rubbish now. Really binging.

In 18 months had lost 5 stone but now feel I am out of control

Any tips on how to get back on track?

  • Hi snuggles,

When I feel like bingeing I fill up on healthier food, like soups (I like broth with butter beans and peas added), low fat jelly, low fat yogurt, low fat crisps and fruit. I make up angel delight with skimmed milk, that's quite filling, I eat rice (with mayflower chicken curry or a home cooked chicken dish) or pasta with a home made sauce for dinner to fill up too. Pop corn is also quite filling and relatively low in fat.

The slimming world wedges are a really good swap for chips and if you add Cajun seasoning or chilli they taste really nice.

Toast and beans with a wee bit of cheese is nice or a baked potato for lunch.

Being prepared and not letting myself get hungry really helps me make better choices.

    Lots of love

  • Hi ladies I put on over 3 stone in a very short space of time. I kidded myself that I couldn't lose weight until after my diep flap. My oncologist told me that tamoxifen would pile the weight on even if I starved he said. So when I went for a check up after 6 months I couldn' wait to tell him if lost a stone and a half.  No excersize just having more fluids green tea camomile mint oh and started having breakfast. I've had my op so starting to walk a little too. I'm now 14 stone but really want to be 11im 48 so maybe a bit unrealistic but I'm gonna try. Xx

    Peace and plenty. Xx

  • Hi Shellian,

It's not unrealistic to set your target there, it doesn't matter how long it takes to get there, the main thing is that you try, and anything that you can do will at least stop you putting more weight on.

You have done amazingly well to loose weight before your op with the pre op nerves hanging over your head and I'm personally glad to read that you managed it without too much exercise lol!

I need to up my daily steps, I'm not doing that many.

    Welcome to the group.

  • Is weight gain a side=effect of letrozole, anyone know?xxhave been treading water with my weight for a year now, despite going gym and rducing intkae of unhealthy food .

  • Hey AnaE,
You're absolutely right in saying that a tablet saying it has a possible side effect, doesn't mean that side effect will definitely happen. I have an awesome couple of side effects for one of my meds - Moon face,

Sudden onset of enlarged eyeball, and euphoria. However, luckily/sadly, none of those have seemed to have happened. lol

I very much think that weight gain from meds and treatment goes hand in hand with where your head is at. If you're in a good place, and physically you feel able bodied, then if you notice that you are starting to put on weight - then you can do something about it imediately. Thereby nipping it in the bud by changing your eating habits or exercise routine. However, if your activity and mental state aren't in the best of shape, then weight gain will happen naturally.

You then add in a medication or treatment to the mix, and if you happen to be one of the folks who gets the weight gain side effect, then even with the best will in the world, you may not be able to keep the weight off.

However, we're here to help everyone who wants to lose - or gain - some weight, regardless of how they got to that point. If you want to change your body, then drop on in and we'll support you through and cheer you on!

    :D

    Hey Snuggles,

It's so easy in stresful times to reach for the junk! It's there, it's ready to eat, and it needs 0 prep time. And sometimes, when you feel you can't manage a meal, some sort of junk food goes down all too well. However, losing 5 stone is a MASSIVE achievement, and a lot of hard work I'm sure! I guess I'd say to look back on those 18 months and ask if you want to throw all of that hard work away?

As Arla says, filling up on healthy stuff is an excellent idea. For myself, I know that if I have unhealthy things in the house then I binge on them. So maybe you need to do the same to start with? Get rid of all the snacky, binge food and refill the cupboards with healthy alternatives. Fruit is a great filler I've found, and as it's sweet, it helps with the cravings for sweet things. (I found some BEAUTIFUL mandarins at the Leeds market, so I'd def recommend nosing round a nearby market if you have one?)

I'm not a massive soup fan myself, but it is def healthy - if you pick/make the right one. Also, if you switch out some of your pasta for grated carrot/courgette/etc then that lowers the calories of a pasta dish too.

But I think Arla hit the nail on the head when she said it's about prepartion. Having stuff ready to go in my fridge has meant a lot less takeaways, and nipping to the corner shop for rubbish because I didn't feel like cooking or I'd forgotten to defrost something. Now, I'm guilted into eating what's in my fridge, as I hate food waste! lol

    Hey Shellian,

Absolutely nothing wrong with having a goal. And I don't think your age should dictate what weight you are. Just check out those 80 year old body builders to see you can do anything you set your mind to!

Would you like me to add you to the front page tracking post? Then you can see the progress you're making, which is always a good feeling to see where you started and where you are now.

    Arla,

Wish you were closer. My steps are shocking at the moment, and I could do with a walking buddy - even if it's just round the block. lol

    Hey Cannon,

I answered that one on the previous page. It is a known side effect, but it doesn't mean that everyone will get it. I guess the question would be, what are you eating and what are you doing at the gym? Have youone of those fitness trackers you wear on your wrist, or an app on your phone? Might be an idea to look at exactly what you're eating and see if it's as healthy as it could be - if you're wanting to lose weight of course. If you're happy maintaining, then yay!

I haven't had Ready Brek in years so not too sure what that's like. I'm supposing you've tried Weetabix which goes down into a complete mush. (Wouldn't recommend Shredded Wheat though!) Porridge made with lots of water or milk would be good too.

Do you like yoghurts? What about mashed potato with a bit of butter and/or Cheddar melted in for extra taste and calories or mushy peas? - just wondering what you have tried. I suppose it is the hardness which causes problems with certain foods.

You seem more 'up' from your first post which is great to hear.
