Hi, I am due to go to be seen for my first appointment at the breast clinic at the Hospital on the 13th of January.

My sternum has been popping/cracking for around 6 months now and I presumed that it was due to my Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome?

I examined my breasts a few weeks ago and I found a lump the size of a marble or slightly bigger in my right breast low down deep in the tissue towards my rib. I was examined by my Gp and she referred me straight away.

I have received my letter and it states that most of the investigations get done on the day of the appointment and I should get a diagnosis on the day too?

I am anxious and feel like I am in limbo just waiting. I just want to know what I am dealing with.

  • Hi

So sorry that you find yourself here but a warm welcome to the group .

Of course you are anxious - waiting for a diagnosis is horrible and your mind is probably racing around to some dark corners and frightening you. There are a couple of things to keep in mind at those times - the majority of referrals to the breast clinic turn out to be something other than cancer.  There are lots of other things that it could be and breast clinics treat those as well as breast cancer.

If it should turn out to be cancer - breast cancer is very treatable and outcomes are excellent. There are many of us on this community who have been through treatment and are now getting on with our lives. My treatment finished about 4 years ago and sometimes I have to remind myself that it happened at all.

It's great that you are going to a one-stop-shop and will get your results on the day - the waiting causes so much anxiety. It's tempting to think that the speed of the referral means it's something bad, but they are supposed to see all referrals in 2 weeks so don't let that worry you.

We are a very friendly bunch here and happy to support you whatever you need. This under 50s group is a little quieter than the main breast cancer group but is still active - you might wait a little longer for replies, that's all. You don't have to stick to this one - you can use the main group or both - whatever you are comfortable with. Have a look around and shout if you need a hand with anything.

We'll keep our fingers crossed for you on Wednesday and we are all hoping that it will be something else and you won't have any need for us! Let us know how you get on

Hi, I just thought that I would post an update....I had my appointment and investigations. I have a benign lump in my right breast that needs nothing to be done about it. I am so relieved. Thank goodness.

I have been referred to the Rheumatologist regarding my sternum popping as it could be due to my Hypermobile Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. I have got my appointment on the 9th of February.
