Hi,

I am 44 years old and was diagnosed with breast cancer 19/10/20. I have had surgery, 2 lumpectomy's and fat from my back was used to build me back up, I also had 5 nodes removed, one being the sentinel node. I am happy to say that all is well, they are confident that everything has been removed and my nods are clear. I currently have one breast facing forward and one facing to the left which I know is all part of the healing process so I am trying not to be too worried about it. I will be starting radiotherapy soon, I have a telephone appointment on 5th January, not really sure what to expect on the call but I am learning to just go with things. I have been off work since 02nd December which was the day of my surgery and had a 28 day review of my absence yesterday which has left me very anxious. I was asked if I could return to work even just for a few hours per day even though I have a fit note from my GP until March, I said I didn't feel able to work but I feel like a fraud now. I was working from home prior to my surgery as I was isolating and I am now feeling pressured into working. I was also acting as a manager for at least the last 2 years and being paid an extra allowance for this, I was told yesterday that this will stop as I have been off sick for one month from 01st January so I feel I am being punished for been sick.

Has anyone else had anything like this please?

  • Hi

Sorry to hear about your issues with work - it's really the last thing you need right now.

I wasn't treated that well when I went through treatment and I think there is often a lack of understanding of what treatment entails. You are covered by the Equality Act so employers should not be treating you unfairly because of your cancer diagnosis, but then again, they usually have good ways of framing things so as not to fall under that. You are most definitely not a fraud and if you don't feel able to work, then you shouldn't have to work.

You could post this in the Ask an Expert section - there is one for Ask a Work Support Adviser. If you are a member of a union, it might be worth approaching them as well.

On a positive note - well done on getting through treatment this far and good luck with your radiotherapy
