Panic and worry

The waiting for the op and self isolating is so tough, my kids are in bits and I can't seem to shake this horrendous feeling from my body. Tummys in knots, feel shakey, pacing floor but tired, I've tried meditation, keeping busy but it's just there constantly.

Also struggling with people not knowing what to say to me, or the looks of sympathy xx

  • Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry to read how you're struggling at the moment. Although I had a different type of cancer to you I do understand how difficult waiting for treatment to begin can be.

I know it's easy to say 'try not to worry' but, as someone said to me, worrying won't make any difference to the outcome but it will make your life a misery in the meantime. Now is the time to indulge yourself doing things you enjoy, meeting up with friends (socially distanced of course) anything to occupy your mind.

It's also very common for people not to know what to say. Lots of people are scared of saying the wrong thing so you might need to help them at first. Macmillan has this information on how to tell people you have cancer and practical tips on how to cope with their reactions.

It's also understandable that your children are very upset and it might help them to take a look through this booklet that Macmillan have produced with you about when an adult has cancer. You can either view it online, download it, or order one to be sent through the post. If they are teenagers they might like to take a look at riprap which is a website for teenagers who have a parent with cancer.

You might also like to post on the main group as it's a lot busier than this one and there's always someone around to chat to.

    Sending a supportive ((hug))
