Hello

I was told last Friday that I have Invasive Lobular Cancer. I had my MRI scan yesterday and on Tuesday I will meet my consultant to find out more about my diagnosis and the treatment plan. I am reeling from the news and I am so so scared. I am 47 and have a 10 year old son.
I’d welcome any advice on how to process this without going crazy and how to tell my son.

thank you

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community

I'm very sorry that you've recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and, although I didn't have the same type of cancer as you, I understand how frightening it is to be told.

Most people, myself included, found that once we knew what the treatment plan was we felt more in control. Hopefully, you'll feel this too after your consultation on Tuesday.

You might want to consider joining the main breast cancer group as it's much busier than this one and you're more likely to get a reply from others with breast cancer there. If you'd like to join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens.

I didn't have children to tell about my diagnosis but it might help you to prepare if you have a look at this information from Macmillan on talking to children and teenagers about cancer and also this about how to talk to children of your son's age.

There is also this booklet you can download or order to be posted out if you think that sitting down and going through that with your son would help.

When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
