Hi all,
Been offered the choice of having tamoxifen and wondered what other people’s experiences were, doctors seem to think in my case It would have little benefit but have a strong family history of breast cancer and most scared about reoccurrence!
Anyone else had to make the choice, or can help with what the side effects are like?
thanks
Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community
It's always horrible when we're offered a choice because we often don't know which way to go. I don't have the experience you're looking for but I noticed that your post hadn't had any response so thought I'd recommend that you join the main breast cancer group and post there as well.
If you'd like to do this just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then copy and paste your question from here into a new post there after selecting 'start a discussion' and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Hi Owlet, I wasn't given the choice so didn't have to make that decision, however I did start Tamoxifen early December. I haven't had many side effects, few overly heated moments but nothing too drastic. I have had some very emotional times, not sure if due to tamoxifen or just through facing difficulties. I was quite apprehensive about starting hearing about possible side effects but everyone experiences these differently. Hope you are able to make a decision that is right for you. Hope this is of some help to you x
Dear Owlet,
I started Tamoxifen in October 2019 and so far, I have not really noticed any side effects. My periods are less heavy and last for a shorter amount of time, but other than that.. ( Oh, and bad wind sometimes, but this might be due to the fact that I am eating more vegetables than I used to. ) - so it has not really changed my life much at all and it is such a tiny little tablet that I don't really think about it now.
I think everyone responds differently.
Good luck with everything,
Sukki. xxxx
Hi Owlet,
i started tamoxifen late 2016 I was really worried because I heard horror stories about the side effects. I am happy to report that I haven’t had any noticeable side effects.

Hi , hope your doing ok. I was 50 when diagnosed in September last year and had a 6.5cm tumour removed along with all lymph nodes last October, I then chose radiotherapy and was put on tamoxifen (decision made by oncologist) both December. Everyone has different effects but personally mine are much heavier periods and some joint pain (elbow mainly) but nothing drastically uncomfortable, I hope you get some useful feed back and feel happy in coming to your decision. Huge hugs xx
