New Diagnosis

So due to a family history I referred myself to the family history centre and it was recommended I have mammograms from the age of 35. Yesterday I got the cancer diagnosis (am 38 now). My husband has been wonderfully supportive since the initial indication and I have a beautiful 2 year old

they have said it’s small and treatable so feeling positive (sort of), however my mind is doing somersaults about the best cause of treatment.

The dr says it can be treated with a lumpectomy but I can consider a mastectomy. I know it’s still very early days but I keep thinking I should go for a mastectomy and ask them to just remove both

How do you even begin to arrive at this decision?

Hi, your story sounds so similar to mine!  I too have strong family history and was having yearly early screening.   I found a lump in April.  The decision about the operation is a hard one which only you can make.  I had a lumpectomy in the end but I too found it a hard decision.   There are options to have a mastectomy at a later point especially if you are eligible for gene testing and are found to have the gene.  The nurse told me the outcomes are just as good if you are advised to have a lumpectomy- sometimes they don’t give you the choice!   Hope you come to a decision and good luck on your journey,  I’m having my radiotherapy this week!

I think through my own experiences through my mother - it is important to weigh up the decision.

A mastectomy can be completed after lumpectomy, however you will have to weigh up the option of going in for surgery again.

Feeling positive and hopeful will make you feel great, so keep it up! I hope you and your family are well.

  • Hello Jessica ST

I'm 55 and have had chemo and surgery. I'm struggling and would love some advice from your mum how to move forward.
