I have just been advised that after my surgery last week to remove a 5cm tumour from my right breast I now need chemotherapy. How do you get a wig and is there any where where you can get a wig made out of your own hair?

Good morning, my chemotherapy specialist nurse gave me all the information for a nhs funding for a wig.
I went to a wonderful shop, that my hospital uses, the lady spent a long time trying on wigs, got a bit emotional at times but they were fantastic . Hope this helps.

I'm due to start chemo in 4-5 weeks and my Oncologist said that I will receive details of a wig specialist before I start treatment.  Due to coronavirus local shops are closed and I am reluctant to go online to buy as I may get sizing  colour and style wrong. With the summer coming I intend to buy some colourful scarfs but with the help of the bcn will look into a wig. You can get synthetic wigs but I'm looking at human hair. Lots of different styles but I spoke to my hairdresser who is trained in cutting wigs and if it is not quiet my usual style she will cut it and thin it out so it looks more natural. Also look at lace caps as these I believe have a more natural looking scalp.

Dont forget not everyone looses their hair but it is a good idea to look into this well before treatment starts.

More importantly take some photos on your phone or with you for your consultation then then can see your usual colour and style. Hey you may want to go all out and get pink, blue, green  colour short, long, curly, straight!!!!

Hi....I live in Scotland and received a prescription through the post for NHS wig.  I then had to choose a supplier from a pre approved list. I browsed quite a bit online and got a few recommendations on brand. I opted for one from the Raquel Welch range and received it just before all the hairdressers had to close.

I have to say I ended up shaving my head as the hair loss  just became too much.....hair everywhere. It took a few goes but I got there and it was the best thing I could have done!

What has surprised me the most is I have totally embraced the bald look and anyone that knows me knows how much pride I take in my hair...I’m in my hairdressers every 6 weeks like clockwork for cut and colour...well not always a cut!! I have a few caps/turbans but I think I look better bald....I do sometimes wear a scarf round my neck as I feel a draft!!

I guess what I’m trying to say is it’s really not as bad as you think it’s going to be once you accept you’re going to lose your hair. Yes it’s shit, there’s no getting away from it but we are strong and we can deal with it x

I got my wig from a shop close to where i live, but there are also some available at the Macmillan shop at the hospital i had my treatment.

When you go for your pre assessment for chemotherapy ask the nurse if there are any places in your area. Also if you are in receipt of some benefits you can get a voucher which will entitle you to a free one. I actually liked my nhs wig more than the one my mum bought for me.

If you want to see what some of us look like in Our Wonderful Wigs click here. I was surprised how nice they are.

Hello Just17. I’ve been recently diagnosed, and the nurse told me to contact Hair To Ware, which is a specialist wig shop for people who have lost their hair. Obviously you can’t visit at the moment, but I sent photos of myself. Then had a Face time with them. Amanda was lovely, showed me different options and the posted a few out to me. Then we did another FaceTime to practise putting them on etc. I picked two and sent the rest back. They’re based in Ware... north of London x

  • Hi ya, my hospital unit gave me details of a wig fitter who attends the chemo and oncology  ward every week....i contacted him before my chemo started and he brought me wigs to the hospital to try on....then when i found the one i liked he got my NHS voucher from my chemo nurse and sorted it all out for me.....i didnt have to go anywhere else.....dont know if there is such a set up at your hospital but worth asking about x

Thanks currently the wig shop at the hospital is shut along with every Wig shop. Makes it so more difficult to choose as have to order online!

  • There is a woman on facebook who sells wigs and accepts NHS vouchers....she runs her own shop....i have ordered from her before....Sasha Grace Hair Solutions....she is lovely and has still been selling i believe x
