Hormone therapy before surgery

Hi everyone

I was diagnosed with stage 2 invasive ductal cancer 2 weeks ago. In two weeks time I have my first oncology appointment and I have no idea what to expect.

My consultant has recommended that I do around 9 months of hormone therapy to stop the oestrogen production, induce my menopause and hopefully shrink the tumour.

I don’t know whether this first appointment will involve being given the first injection and tablets?
I just want to get started now. I hate the waiting around and almost wish I had pushed to go straight to surgery instead of prolonging this.

does anyone have any thoughts/experience with something similar?
thank you xx

  • Hi!

Did your oncologist explain why they want to give you the hormone reducing tablet/injection first? Did they mention having a lumpectomy after that?

I was also told that my lumpectomy would come first then treatment depending upon that. I asked the question of if beds for operations were not available what would happen to me, so I was told that I would be given tablets to stop oestrogen production first.

I think the best thing is to ask your consultant his/her reasoning behind the course of your treatment. I'm sure they all know what they are doing and whatever happens they will definitely get you started on something so please try not to worry. Xxxx

    Hi

Seems several ladies here have had their surgery postponed. It is probably to reduce the number of people coming into hospital and freeing up beds because of the increasing Coronavirus risk within hospitals.

Looks like new member is in the same boat ?

    Take care, G n' J

    Hi Emski2623

    Sorry to hear your news.

I am being put on tablets as a hormone based cancer. I have to be on these for at least 3 months.

Was told they would operate but too risky with this Covid19. I’ve just read though that cancer patients may be going to private hospitals which is great news.

Good luck with your treatment x
