Hi everyone

I am 39 and I was diagnosed with grade 2 invasive breast cancer last month. I am due to start chemo next week. I have a 2 year old who goes to nursery twice a week and he always seems to have a cold, runny nose and picks up bugs easily.  I keep being told to keep away from people with colds and also been told by the doctor that he should carry on going to nursery to keep 'normality'. I'm a bit confused of what to do and how to stop getting his germs! If anyone has any advice of what to do that would be great! Thank you xxx

  • Hi Murphywoof welcome to the forum.

Its a difficult one I think because I imagine that being as normal as you can for your 2 year old will be important for you and them so having them around will be better for both of you.

That said they can and do pick up bugs from nursery and its a hazzard thats difficult to stop unfortunately. However, If I was you and you wanted to maybe run this by the chemo unit where you are going to be having your treatment they maybe better able to answer any concerns that you have.

Sorry not to have been of more help but sending my very best wishes your way for the chemo and do keep in touch and let us know how it is all going for you. xxxx

  • Hi ya....i don't know if its standard....but when i went through FEC-T i had to take an antibiotic everyday throughout treatment...just one a day....they were given to me every treatment day to take home with me along with my anti sickness meds.

I was also concerned because i work in retail (i still carried on working throughout all my cancer treatment) and i also have a child.....but my wise chemo nurse told me that we cant lock ourselves away.

Maybe ask if you too can have antibiotics.....i don't remember what they were called but it was one a day.

Yes try and avoid ill people where possible but sometimes it cant be helped.....i also kept hand sanitiser with me.

I wish you all the best xxx

    Hi

Thank you for your help. That is a good idea, I will definitely ask the chemo nurse. I have also bought lots of hand sanitiser although it was really hard to find as there is a national shortage apparently!!

    Thanks again
