Really rough 1st night at home post op

Hey there 

Sorry to hear your in so much pain , can I ask what surgery you have had ? 
Call your GP as soon as they open for done anti sickness and stomach protection and don’t worry about the dressing , usually they stay in place for approx 72 hours unless it’s saturated . Your GP could send a nurse to check it or call the ward for the instructions again .

i know all a pain in the butt to do when your in pain  

really hope it settles over the day for you .

I am so sorry you had such a rough night.  It will get easier, I promise.  Just make sure you have plenty of pain relief and drink masses of water. xx

So sorry to hear this. I’ve never heard of someone being sent home without meds, that is terrible after having an operation. I would ring the ward/GP’s and get someone to pick them up for you.

I hope you get something sorted straight away. Did the hospital say anything about district nurses coming round to check dressings etc?

Hope you are feeling a bit better this morning. Did you get a leaflet with a contact number to ring? I'm still waiting for results so not had any surgery but I am a nurse and it sounds really bad that you were discharged without any medication or written advice. Hope you get sorted, take care xxxx

Hi Autumn49 I see that you had a lumpectomy and sentinel nodes removed. I'm guessing that it's the nodes that are affecting your arm. Did they give you a sheet of exercises to do ? though to be honest didn't do anything for a couple of days as I was worried about the stitches pulling. It is important and you keep your arms below shoulder height for that reason at first, but move them a bit.

I hope that you've sorted out pain relief too. Our hospital gives the strong version of co-codamols to take home when required, and I'm surprised that they didn't give anything. Have you a breast nurse you could speak to? You should have an appointment for a wound check, and also if you have a drain for the bottle to be removed. Did they give you a sheet to fill in with amounts each day (if you have a drain)?

Take it easy for the next few days as the anaesthetic will be in your system for a few days, and you might also have a sore throat from the tube or slight chest congestion. That should disappear in the next few days too.

I rang ward back 7.30pm after shift had changed and asked what times I'd had what tablets, when and dosage etc he did not have access to my notes so tried to get me to remember what I'd had! 

I got discharged 5years ago from same hospital after abdominal hysterectomy with zero meds on a Friday 5pm.

I have now contacted GP and other half has left me for half an hour to go collect codeine to get me through the weekend especially at night.

Also rang breast nurses left message for post op advice as the lack of sleep and pain making my brain a sieve. 

The ward number was on the discharge and it listed meds but they did not give them just told me to pop in the chemist on the way out as if I'd had a tooth out.. 

I have to remove the dressing to check for infection I also get topical reaction to some dressings. It was "only" lumpectomy and sentinel nodes analysis but I have a very heavy stiff arm and the breast is painful despite paracetamol and ibuprofen and feels like waves of pain. If I sit very still it stops any movement sets it off

Other half back with codeine,  mega packs of paracetamol and ibuprofen and bananas! Phew now the rest and recovery can begin. So much better with correct pain relief an hours snooze at lunchtime wasn't hungry today but drinking water, squash and juice don't fancy tea/coffee as the milk tastes odd it must be the drugs funnymetallictwang? breast nurse said dressings are to be kept on for a week and kept dry then either I can remove them or surgery nurse or breast unit will do it. Really pleased to be home  x
