Look after the operation

I know this sounds selfish and stupid but I feel more worried about what my breast will look like after my operation, than actually having cancer. I don’t know if I can’t accept I have cancer or if I know I will beat it. Or I’m just F***ing mad.

    Hi

Bit of an impossible Q to answer for the individual really.

Depends on how much tissue they need to remove to get clear margins (some have to have a second surgery to obtain this) Some can look a little unbalanced, or dimpled; in some cases with bigger breasted ladies they can reduce the 'good side' down to match or sometimes it is possible to inject fat from elsewhere into the surgery side. If you are small breasted it can look quite different to your good side.

You need to be asking your surgeon really as they all have their own way of carrying out breast procedures. Have you had a meeting yet to be able to ask about all this ?

  • Hi Kemp,

its not stupid or selfish. You probably are trying to digest your diagnosis and trying to take your mind off it. I know how you feel as I had lumpsectomy and breast reduction to remove my cancer and after two operations I still cannot look at my breast properly. But it’s a time factor thing but every one is so different on how they deal with it and you will in your own time. I am only just starting to look but still can’t look properly yet and my first op was mid August and my second op was beginning of September. I now look odd as I have a patchwork boob and a normal boob which will eventually be reduced to match my patchwork boob.

take care and all the best for your surgery.

  • I’m pleased with mine, I had immediate reconstruction but the nipple couldn’t be spared.

The scar is hardly noticeable, I wore a bikini this summer. I’m slightly lob sided, surgeon said he’d do an op to lift my other breast to match, I’m not ready to go through another operation yet. After radiotherapy an oncologist told me to wait at least 12 months anyway.
