Hi, I was diagnosed with Breast cancer on the 15th Feb I’m 46 and I honestly didn’t see it coming! My world crumbled and I started the drill to test for everything. Today I had my second appointment to discuss a mastectomy with reconstruction. It sounds hideous, but has to be done. I try to remain positive and find something positive in everyday. I’m waiting for my operation date. I’m scared to death but will endure it like I have all the tests!
Hi
Sorry for your diagnosis. Like you say you are trying to remain positive, which is great.
I had a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction and it was fine, only problem I had was with sickness due to the antibiotics. I wasn’t in pain and healed quickly. I suffer with Lymphoedema (swelling) but small price to pay I find, for the tumour’s removal. I had physio and now discharge from them after 4 sessions.
Its scary of course, but it must be the best treatment for you, your consultant and team are experts in their field, that’s what I hung onto.
Hope you get your date soon...let us know how you get on x
Hi Mel,
i also had a mastectomy and immediate reconstruction and in the grand scheme of things it was fine. Take the advice of the docs; no lifting, keep everything in your house at eye level so you’re not reaching into cupboards for things, rest a lot, listen to your body and you should be fine.
its natural to feels scared, especially if you haven’t spent much time in hospital before (I hadn’t even been admitted to a hospital before my diagnosis, now I feel part of the furniture )
The procedure does sound horrific but try to think of it as a glorified boob job and it will seem less scary. Our minds naturally see it as worse because of the C word. What sort of recon are you having?
Good luck and let us know how you get on. Xx
Hi, thanks for your reply - I’m still waiting for a date. There has been a few mess ups but hopefully it will come this week! They are taking fat from my tummy and legs (I’m little) and building theew boob. They are going to do a reduction at the same time they are teeny tiny now. I just want to crack on and start coming out the other side
You’re welcome and happy to help wherever I can.
They used muscle from my back for my recon but I did joke that I wanted a tummy tuck for it but they politely declined
I’m sure they’ll have you in and sorted in no time. Keep us updated x
I had a immediate reconstructio, I didn’t have any skin taken from where else, although my surgeon did say that would be the case if I waited and had a reconstruction late. I just didn’t want another op.
Looking back I’d do the same thing. I had a node clearance after the mastectomy, so had 2 ops and the thought of having to go through another op now is not appealing. x x
