Hello great hive mind!
Do any of you have any experience of taking Aspirin with Tamoxifen? My type of breast lump is HER2- ER&PR+ with ostensibly no spread so, at the moment, no chemo, just pre-surgery Tamoxifen lasting for at least 5 years, surgery & reconstruction in a few weeks, then radiotherapy (so long as they don't find anything more suspicious in the mastectomy material). I've also developed high cholesterol from sitting around eating cheese for a year, and may have been experiencing some effects from that in recent months.
I put myself on high dose Aspirin for a short time to help unclog my system, whilst also reducing the cholesterol I was eating in my diet. I am now reducing the dose to the old recommended 75mg a day to ward off future stroke/heart problems. However, my GP says that the use of Aspirin before having any significant symptoms of heart attack or stroke is now out of date and the risks of gastric bleeding from Aspiring outweigh its benefits.
I've read a couple of articles about Aspirin working with Tamoxifen to increase Tamoxifen's effect, and the use of Aspirin to disrupt cancer stem cells both to prevent cancer recurrence and to treat triple negative breast cancers where chemo has little effect. I've also read that some GPs suggest it is useful to take Aspirin whilst on Tamoxifen to offset Tamoxifen's DVT side effects, just before and during long-haul flights, rail journeys or long periods of being sedentary.
Anyone seen any of this, or is on any trials for Aspirin?
Cheers
Hi
There was a recent discussion about this in the main breast group you can check out until you get some replies here.
It runs to 2 pages and includes a link to the Add Aspirin Trial website and can be found clicking here.
Hope this is of some help, G n' J
Ooo ta! I did a search and didn't find anything at first. Massive thanks to the pointer!
Hi lumpylady
I can pass on what I was recently told by one of my oncology team - the context takes a bit of explaining - sorry.
I developed a superficial blood clot in my arm during chemo and was put on daily blood thinner injections to treat it - extended to take me through my surgery (6 months in all) I will be taking Tamoxifen for 10 years and my oncology team told me to ask the haematology team if that was OK (because of the DVT risk) They advised using anastrazole instead but I don't want to do that as I already have some bone thinning - they then advised putting me on oral blood thinners which I was also not keen on.
When I saw an oncologist about Tamoxifen, I discussed all this - he said they would rather put me on mini aspirin - the 75mg but gastric resistant (I questioned the stomach problems). He seemed to think this was a fairly standard thing for anyone with a clot risk.
As it happens, I saw the lead haematologist and he decided I had no clot risk so am back to just Tamoxifen.
So, this is a very long way of saying they can give you aspirin that shouldn't cause stomach bleeding - perhaps you would have better luck talking to your oncologist - it may depend on how you approach it - cancer treatment or DVT risk.
The add aspirin trial is really interesting.
Good luck

Hi
I’m on the add aspirin trial, and tamoxifen ( after having stage 2 breast cancer, mastectomy/ chemo/ radiotherapy). I’ve been on both for about 15 months but to be honest struggling with the side effects.... sweats, hot flushes both particularly impact me, especially (I wonder) as I’m running 3 times a week ( I can become quite light headed and faint when suffering a hot flush whilst running). Does anyone else have this issue when running? Could aspirin enhance/worsen side effects of Tamoxifen? Any thoughts gratefully received.x
