I cared for Stuart from his major surgery for oesophageal cancer to his last admission to hospital. He had just finished radiotherapy 11 days before he was admitted to hospital, as an emergency, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia. Very sadly he did not recover and I have questioned myself, despite being seen by district nurses, whether I should have insisted he was put back on antibiotics sooner. I remember he dragged himself through radiotherapy and I kept thinking why is he so poorly. I have to remind myself I’m not a health professional.
