Worrying about Anniversaries

I'm just over 8 months along this horrible path.  Nick passed away on 27th November, his 49th birthday was on 17th November.  On my 50th birthday on October 6th we were told the treatment wasn't working and the cancer had spread.

These anniversaries are sort of looming over me.  I don't know how to cope with them at all.  I'm getting upset because no-one else is remembering them.  But of course they wouldn't because there's only me that was his wife.

My neice invited me to Mama Mia 2 days after Nick's birthday and she looked at me like she couldn't have cared less when I said no it's too near Nick's birthday.

Nick's family won't bother to remember

Why don't people have it etched on their heads like I do?

  • I feel that too sometimes. It feels like I am the only one who remembers Jay and still talks about him. At the beginning when he passed I couldn't talk about him but now its as if I talk about him all the time. Keeps his memory alive. No one else remembered the anniversary of his passing recently either. My sister did but she is one of those people who remembers birthdays anniversaries etc. No one seems to acknowledge Jay or talk about him and when I mention him in conversation no one seems to pass comment it's just as though he never existed. My son doesn't even speak about his dad but I put that down to him just remembering his dad his own way. Jay was quite popular and knew a lot of people but it just seems that all those people have just forgot about him and that is so sad.

  • It's so sad that people do this, just stop remembering.  When I think about it I'm really the only one who remembers my mum and dad, my brother doesn't really and he lives far away from the grave too so he never visits.  It's like there's this group of folk that won't have been here at all once I'm gone.

It panics me that no-one will remember Nick.  I know I only have one subject and that's Nick and all the legal and financial things so its boring for everyone but he deserves so much more.  And so I think I'll fail Nick again.

  • It really is Horrible leading up to any of the Anniversaries . I was the same earlier this year . All the 1st .s without my Love . My elder sister asked if I was going to visit Mum with her and stay overnight. I didn't really want to because it was the date of his passing. And I knew I was going to be in a bad way. I went anyway because she has just turned 94, and  I it's difficult to get away when my youngest son is working away ,because there' s only me to see to the 4 dogs. I didn't mention what the significance of those days were , But my Mum and youngest sister remembered. I got a text from the youngest sister saying she understood it would be a difficult day for me. I just replied Thanks cos' I was struggling to keep my emotions in check. So I get that you would have found it a difficult time to even enjoy going to the Mama Mia thing. I've given a few events a miss which my elder sister has invited me to. I just cannot near listening to music now. Your niece might have been trying to help you by arranging the Mamma Mia thing to occupy your thoughts or something. Take the focus off the  hurt you were feeling. I know others don't really understand. Its like my elder sister is always moaning about her Husband . And she doesn't realise I'm thinking I just wish mine was still here .  As for coping with these significant days...well we haven't much choice. We do get through them one way or another.  I just try to keep myself busy, but my mind still goes over everything that happened and was said and it makes me cry.   When I'm talking to strangers or neighbours here who don't know  what happened to my Hubby and I start saying My Husband did this ,or said that..then I catch myself  because I don't want to let on that he's gone . I dread them asking is he still here or are you split up. So I try to carry on talking about something else . I don't want to break down in front of them in the street or in a shop.  But it's upsetting when our family don't even mention them.
