  • Hi Mr Burns

My name is Gemma and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

Thank you for contacting us and sharing the fantastic news about your wife's response to chemotherapy.

It's really useful to plan before starting any new treatment and ask questions about what to expect.

Niraparib is a type of targeted therapy. There are many different types of targeted therapy. Each one targets something in or around the cancer cell that is helping it grow and survive.

Clinical trials for Niraparib became approved as a first-line maintenance treatment for Ovarian Cancer after showing significant improvements in progression-free survival.

There are results of the trial findings in reports for example in the European Society For Medical Oncology, these can be difficult to interpret.

Cancer Research also has interesting facts about trials with Niraparib and the publications of results.

Niraparib side effects can vary from person to person, but there is still an increased risk of infection as with chemotherapy.

The side effects are managed in the same way as your wife’s chemotherapy and they will give her details of who to contact if she is unsure or needs to report a symptom.

We also have useful Online Forums where you can chat with groups of people who have been affected by ovarian cancer or are being treated with niraparib.

Or you can call the Macmillan Support Line for free on 0808 808 00 00 as it can be easier to discuss diagnosis, treatments or practical support in real-time with a specialist.

    All the best
