I receive Pembrolizumab at 6 week intervals, I have had 7. The last COVID vac I had was Nov 22, I was ill after that one and the previous two.

Should I have one this winter and if I do when would be the best time to have it regarding the treatment schedule?.

  • Hi Daisy

My name is Gemma and I am one of the Cancer Information Nurse Specialists on the Macmillan Support Line.

Thank you for getting in touch about getting your COVID vaccination,

Specialists say that everyone having systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT) should be considered for the vaccine. Systemic anti-cancer therapy includes treatments such as chemotherapy/immunotherapy. It can cause a weakened immune system.

We do not have access to your medical notes here on the web chat so although it is ok for you to have the Corona Virus Vaccine, we would suggest contacting your consultant or nurse specialist for the best time within your treatment cycle to have the jab. This is especially as you have had side effects after the previous vaccinations.

The NHS Guidance advises on the most common side effects and how to manage them.

If it’s helpful, consider giving us a call – Sometimes it's easier to get support when we can talk together. Our contact details are at the bottom of my response.

    Take Care
