My husband has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer.  He was really unwell and went into hospital. He had a double nephrostomy and been discharged. He now has the urge to pee and is passing spots of blood. Can't get a doctor. Should we head over to A+E. Thanks

  • Hello Archie123

Thank you for getting in touch. My name is Helen, I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.

I was sorry to read that your husband is having some difficulties since his discharge following a double nephrostomy.

It is very difficult to make an assessment of your husband’s symptoms via the online community forum and it essential he is kept safe.

So, if you have been unable to speak to the district nurses who are usually a support to patients back at home and you cannot speak to the GP, the safest action is to attend your Accident and Emergency Department.

Before you do, please check all the paperwork he was given on discharge as it is normal practice to be given a number to call in the event of any post operative issues. I hope you find the emergency number, and this will prevent a trip back to the hospital.

Wishing you good luck and hope the issue is sorted quickly.

The Macmillan Support Line offers practical, clinical, financial and emotional support. You can call us free from landlines and from most mobile phone networks on 0808 808 00 00, 7 days a week, 8am – 8pm.

    Best wishes, Helen
