    Hello Mollysue

Thank you for reaching out to us here at Macmillan Cancer Support. My name is Joanne and I am one of the Cancer Information Specialist Nurses.

I can see you have joined our Travel Insurance Forum and our Womb Cancer Forum and I hope you are finding them supportive.

As nurses on the online community, we don’t have access to your individual healthcare records so would be unable to confirm if you would be able to travel on your holiday as planned.

This is something you will need to discuss with your surgical team and your GP. The NHS provides the following general advice about When you can fly after surgery as a guide.

Whilst most people recover well from surgery with no complications there may be some things which can impact on recovery and may have an impact on your ability to travel.

I have included some information which I hope that you will find useful and describes some of the things women may experience when Recovering from a hysterectomy. Recovery times will vary for each individual but the nurses and physiotherapists in hospital will encourage you to start moving around as soon as possible to help start your recovery and reduce the risk of any complications.

One of the more serious things you would need to consider is the risk of Deep vein Thrombosis or DVT. This is a clot which can develop after surgery, most commonly in the legs. If part of this clot then breaks off or moves, this can block blood vessels and can become serious. Long distance travel is known to be another risk factor in the development of clots so it’s important to have a conversation with your doctor about any increased risks.

This guidance on Pre existing risk factors for DVT  includes some general advice about the preventative measures you can take if your healthcare teams advise you that it is safe for you to travel after your surgery.

When you contact your hospital team to discuss your holiday plans you can also ask them about any Follow up care after treatment . You can then try and schedule any follow up appointments to suit around your holiday dates.

Mollysue I hope this information is useful and that your surgery and recovery go well. Please do keep in touch and let us know if there is anything else that we can help with.

    Wishing you all the best.
