Diagnosed with CML on 10/15/22, started Gleevec on 10/19/22. Minimal to no side effects for 3 months. The last week of Jan 23, I developed a very itchy rash on my arms and chest and burning stinging rash/sensation on my face, scalp and neck, the latter is nearly intolerable. Any suggestions?

  • Hi birdfan48,

Thanks for getting in touch and welcome to the online community.   My name’s Rachel and I’m one of the Cancer Information Nurses on the Macmillan Support Line.

It’s great that you’ve experienced minimal side effects since you started Gleevec (Imatinib) for your CML 3 months ago. I’m sorry to see that you’ve recently developed an itchy rash and burning sensation. I can imagine that this is very distressing for you and I’m glad that you’ve reached out for support with this.

There can be several causes for skin rashes. On this forum we can’t assess what is causing your rash or advise on specific treatments,  but skin changes can be a side effect of Gleevec and can become severe if untreated.

We’d strongly suggest you contact the 24- hour number you were given when you started treatment for urgent advice today, they can assess you and give appropriate advice and treatment.

If you don’t have a number for the assessment unit, please call 111 for medical advice and update your team as soon as possible.

I hope this information is of some help.

Please don’t hesitate to get back in touch for further information and support. You may also like to take a look at the CML group on our online community. It can be a great place to share ideas and get support from others in a similar situation.

    Best wishes
