I would like to ask about what DCIS is classified as for insurance for holidays as many ask has this progressed to breast cancer, when it is in fact breast cancer albeit early. Is this pre cancer or would I be wrong to say it hasn't progressed? I don't want to tick the wrong box. I have had 3 ops and now just starting radiotherapy. Hopefully after that things improve but I'm finding holiday insurance a minefield. If anyone has any experience I would be grateful to hear from you.

  •  Hi ,

Thanks for posting your question today. Cancer and Travel insurance can be complicated, so your right to try get some more information before completing your forms. It is important you are fully covered, but also not paying for something that doesn’t apply to you.

DCIS is the earliest form of breast cancer and is sometimes described as non-invasive breast cancer because the cells that line the ducts have changed to cancer cells but have not spread to surrounding tissue. DCIS needs to be treated but is not usually considered life -threatening.

It may be helpful to contact the insurer directly to check they are happy and agree you are completing the form correctly. Sometimes they may request a medical letter from your GP or hospital team too.

We recommend ‘shopping around’ and getting quotes from different insurers as there can be vast price differences from company to company. If you would like to chat through any of this in more detail our financial guidance team can help.

Steph from our online community team recently shared a blog about cancer and travel that you may find helpful to read. Our online community travel insurance forum is also very active and has hints and tips from other people for have been trying to get travel insurance.

Cancer and its treatment can affect other aspects of travel too. We have information about some of the more common things to consider when going on holiday as well as Radiotherapy for DCIS.

    I hope this helps.

Please feel free to get back in touch if you need any further support with this or anything else. Good luck with the rest of your treatment and I hope you manage to have a lovely holiday.

    Best wishes,
