Temporary foster homes for dogs

Hello

I have 2 large dogs and I am struggling to find temporary foster homes for them so I can have surgery and rehabilitation. I don't have any family and none of my friends feel comfortable looking after big dogs. I can't believe that I am the only person to be or have been in this position, and I thought I would reach out to see if anyone has been in this position and what you did, or if anyone knows of somewhere I can contact? I've tried all my local rescue centres, the vets, Cinnamon Trust have told me I am too young to receive their support, I've tried Dogs Trust, PDSA, RSPCA and I'm at a loss where to try next. The alternative is kennels but the costs estimate is £3500-£4000 and I just don't have the money for this. I'm grateful for any advice anyone can give me. Thank you.

  • Hi Ava0811,

Sorry to hear about your difficulties with finding a temporary foster home for your dogs. When I had surgery earlier this year, dog care was a challenge even with other people who were able to come to the house to help plus a paid dog walker.

It feels like there should/must be a charity to help with this (like Cinnamon Trust but for all ages), but I don’t know of one unfortunately. Hopefully someone will reply who knows another charity/organisation you can try. Which area are you in? In case someone knows a smaller local organisation in your area.

Are your dogs insured? Until I had surgery, I didn’t realise that there’s cover for dog costs while the owner is in hospital and for a period of time afterwards for rehabilitation. It would be worth checking your policy as you may be able to claim for help with the cost of kennels/a pet sitter. Even if it doesn’t cover all of the cost, it hopefully might help if there isn’t another option.

Best wishes for your surgery and I hope you find a suitable arrangement for your dogs.

  • Hi Ava I am so sorry to read this.  I have four dogs and they are my life.  We have a local area fbook page and also a whatsapp.  Another lady had to have back surgery and she was looking for someone to look after her dogs whilst she had op and was recovering.  Someone local volunteered and they had a meet and greet and sleepover to see if it would work.  It did.  Do you have any local fb pages or something like that you can ask on?   It seems strange that there is no help out there.  Good luck.

  • Hello Ava

I’ve only just seen your post, I’m so sorry you are struggling to find help with your dogs.  We have only had giant breeds and I know how difficult it is to find somewhere to home board them or even get them groomed.

If your two are a particular breed (rather than mixes) have you thought of trying the breed rescue coordinators? They may be able to find experienced foster carers as they will probably have a list of suitable homes.  I can’t think of anywhere else to try, you have made so much effort yourself.

I hope you are able to get some help so you can get the treatment you need, best wishes x
