I have stage 4 breast cancer, we already got a dog (male springer spaniel 4 y/o) before my diagnosis 2 years ago. I'm on ribociclib and letrozole (tablets), first line.
My husband has been offered a puppy, 3 months old - a female black Labrador/pointer cross (small/runt of litter). He's very keen on taking her in and would love another dog. Our existing dog has epilepsy.
Although the idea of a friend for my existing dog is a lovely one, I feel that another dog is too much for me to cope with. I can't walk the dog due to bone mets, and try to manage fatigue. I'm also concerned about the extra pet insurance and costs.
I'm worried that another dog, especially a puppy, is the wrong thing for me, due to being immunosuppressed, and ongoing cancer treatment. But I don't want to upset the others.
What do other people think?
Hi njl welcome to the forum. It seems that there are a few good points and not so good points getting another dog..I think it maybe needs an honest conversation about how you are feeling and laying down some rules about the care, walking the dog etc. Would that make any difference. Having another dog I wouldn't have thought would have been any worse than having one dog in that respect. People around you and in contact with the dogs are going to need to be meticulous with hand hygeine when dealing with the animals. Or you just put your foot down and say no more dogs until after my treatment finishes.. I wish you well whatever you decide to do Gail x
Your health and energy come first caring for a new puppy can be overwhelming during treatment.
It's okay to say no; love and support matter more than adding stress right now.
Hi Njl, I am sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I too have stage 4 breast cancer which is being treated with Ribociclib , Exemastane, and denosumab injections. I have extensive bone mets with most of my bones involved. I have four dogs which I walk every day. I find that if I don't walk and keep active my pain especially in my back gets worse. I find that the walking helps me. I am having radiotherapy on Tuesday as one of the cancers on my spine is pushing the discs into spinal cord. Also maybe ask your oncologist about a back brace for your spine. I have just been to the fitting and waiting for mine to come. My oncologist says it should help with the pain and also offer some protection. I do love my dogs and they are the main reason I keep active and get out and about. About the puppy I think it is a good idea but utlimately sometimes you have to put yourself first and do what you feel is right. Good luck with your decision. Big hugs.

Thank you for sharing so openly. It’s completely understandable to feel torn—puppies are joyful, but they do bring a lot of energy and responsibility. Given your treatment, fatigue, and current care needs, it’s wise to prioritize your health and energy. A second dog, especially a puppy, may add more stress than comfort right now. It’s okay to express your concerns gently, your well-being matters too.
