Hi , hello, I didn’t know about this forum, it was suggested to me as I posted a picture on another forum.

I have tongue and lymph node cancer - going through the mill at present - although my Wife and I don’t actually have our own particular furry family member in the sense of owning one - we look after dogs and they all our our family - here’s a picture of some of our furry family , past and present and the ones giving strength, encouragement and inspiration - with everything we’ve gone through together.

Since January this year, I haven’t seen a lot of them but still get to see one or two.

justlove them all !

Hope  and strength to everyone -

Nige

  • Hi Nige

    Welcome to the group.

What a great photo of all the dogs that you have looked after. Looks like some real characters there.

I am sorry to hear that you are having a rough time at the moment and hope that things improve soon for you.

  • Thank you and He will be 7 next month.  Do you foster or just look after dogs?

  • We started by accident although Ellise and I are both huge animal lovers.

We had a neighbour who was going through some rough times and he didn’t take his dog out much -?so one day I knocked on his door and asked if I could take his door out (I made out it was for me to get my fitness), he said ‘do you know he’s a Rottweiler’ ? I said yes but that wasn’t a problem for me.

So I started taking Frank (Rotty’s name) - fabulous boy he was - when people would brave coming over to talk to us and meet him, I explained about why I had him and I got asked a number of times about helping folk with their dogs, from walking them to having them stay or we also got into house-sitting.

And since then for the last 10 or so years, that’s what we’ve done.

We don’t have loads, we build strong relationships with the dogs and in a number of occasions, taken dogs through illness and recuperation after operations etc. Fred the boxer, we had with us for over 8 months the one year - through various circumstances ; he was an amazing dog.

When they stay, they live as our dogs and we love them all to bits.

we’ve been lucky and blessed with all the animals we look after, plus a real bonus, all the owners are lovely people.

your Benji looks a real character !

  • What a wonderful thing to do.   Benji can have his moments he is super friendly but can really vocal if he doesn't get his own way or if he does not get  the attention from humans when he is out on his walks.   We adopted him three months before covid hit. He  has been a godsend as my partner has fibromyalgia so he will snuggle up to her when she has flare ups but loves going on walks with her.

  • Wow, that’s a tough one on your partner

Just amazing how much the dogs give us and it’s all unconditional- apart from the odd treat or ear scratch Slight smile

So many dogs became life savers to folk during covid . Over that period we sort of adopted some foxes round by us. At first feeding them, then we noticed just what poor condition a couple of them were in - we got in touch with a rescue charity who we sent videos to , to show them the condition they were in - they in return sent us some herbal medicines that be put into their food - and slowly but surely they recovered and over the bat covid period of lockdown, they became very trusting and even brought a couple of their cubs with them - but at a distance - we still feed them to this day - Ellise is just preparing the nightly food drop !

  • Hi Legin 13,  what an amazing job you do.  I have four dogs and trying to find someone to look after them is a nightmare when trying to book a holiday. I have secondary cancer now so dont know how many holidays we will be going on.  I do know that they provide a reason for me to get up and walk every day.  I have extensive bone mets and the exercise seems to make it better.  The dogs always know when I feel bad and lie next to me and comfort me.  I feed our foxes every night too and the birds and squirrels.  We are lucky to have wildlife coming to our gardens.  Anyway hope you get to do your awesome job again soon.

  • Hi, hello Lee,- we so enjoy looking after the dogs, before my wife Ellise and I met, Ellise looked after 30 odd cats , feral, when she lived in Malta, with her friend, they were known as the cat ladies of Selena -quite something.

Some of the dogs we look after , we’ve done so since their very young weeks, some their whole lives. Virtually all of the dogs know each other as they invariably have spent days, weeks /holidays with us and in all honesty they get on really well - sharing our bed as well as each other’s , together.

We’ve had all shapes and sizes together - a true  labour of love.

Tomorrow, Sunday, we have Saffy with us for a week - she’ll be there to help me through my visit to the hospital on Tuesday.

All pals together - so good , my cockapoo scamps !

what dogs do you have Lee ?

    wishing you the best- Nige

  • Isn’t it truely special the love and affection that our dogs/animals give us - so unconditional and always when we need it.

Having the wildlife too - nature is  so awesome.

The picture on here is Saffy lay on me - Saffy is about 27 months old: Saffy is one of my inspirations, in her young life, she has already been through so much, in the first 14 months, Saffy has gone through two major operations on her right back leg , and had to spend the best part of 8 months in her cage- BUT if you saw her now, lightening quick, loves life and when she’s with us, my second shadow .

When we lay down on the sofa for a cuddle/snooze , Saffy gets her favourite cushion and lays it on me, then cuddles up. God, I’m so lucky to have her in our lives.
