This damn cancer.

Less than one minute read time.

My husband Tom has inoperable oesophagus cancer and is so desperate to be able to eat ,he has had 6 rounds of chemo which worked brilliantly for a few months and recently finished 2 weeksof radiotheraphy which has made the swollowing better but he can still only eat soups and drink liquids, some days they will stay down other days they come straight back up so he has lost about 2 st in the last few weeks. The doctors just do not be able to control the acid and although he has never moaned from day 1 of diagnosis I can now see that this disease is really starting to get him down,he hates having to sleep a lot of the time and not being able to take the dogs out,as even though he is 71 tomorrow he has always looked and had the energy of someone in their 50's.It is breaking my heart to see him suffering like this and just wish I could cope as well as him.

Hi Marianne, sorry your hubby's having such a hard time. Have a look at my profile to see our history. I'm in the hospital now with my hubby, Pablo. We live in Spain & he takes a drug to control the acid called Omeprazole (I think it may be sold as Prilosec in the UK?) & he just takes one 20mg pill a day.  Although he gets occasional reflux he has no acid now. Pablo is 53 but feels 73 & I'm sitting in the room quietly reading stuff online while he sleeps. If I can help in any way ask away! All the best,    Liz xx

    Hi Marianne,

Last year I was running round with a tube stuck up my nose for 6 mths being fed with liquid food.

So I know how Tom is feeling. I was being fed 5 bottles of Fresubin through the tube everyday.

The reason being they didnt want me to open up any of the scar Tissue on my Oesophagus.by eating solids. But like Tom I miss walking my dog.

Because Im house bound and cant walk very far.

Never mind I was able to eat solids eventually. So tell Tom his day will come soon when he can eat again. You deserve credit for being there for him all the time he has being through this treatment so give yourself a pat on the back for coping.

Take care and be safe Big Hugs Love Sarsfield.xxx

P.S. Happy Birthday Tom for tomorrow and many of them.

Hi Liz Tom has had omperozole but it stopped working for him and is now taking lansopersole in an oral dispersible form as he was finding it difficult to swallow tablets,he also takes gaviscon as well.I am just hoping that the radiotheraphy will eventually work as they do say that is can take up to 4 or 5 weeks to feel the benefits after it has finished.I am so sorry to hear that Pablo is having such a bad time, this form of cancer sure is hell as are all cancers but the not being able to eat just makes it seem worse and I just feel that Tom is going to starve to death.

I will be thinking of you both

    love Marianne x

    Dear Marianne

I know exactly what you mean - it seems so cruel.  A truly horrible cancer.

Just a suggestion - Jonathan was taking Malox - very old fashioned but seemed helpful for a while.   There is, apparently a new version which is like Malox but which has an analgesic in it as well.   This was suggested by one of the pain specialists but in the end was never followed up.  It might be worth asking about.

You are both in my thoughts a great deal.

    Lots of love,

    Grace xxx
