I had already started to make some life changes when I received my cancer diagnosis, but it did focus the mind somewhat. I determined that regardless of how long I have (and let's be honest - none of us can possible know what's around the corner), I will live it with purpose. During the 2 weeks following the diagnosis, I thought about what mattered to me and made a notice which I have in my workroom as a reminder:
Live simply because I want to live rather than spend my life looking after clutter, whether it is physical or emotional. I have begun to clear things out and organise the things I am keeping, to simplify my wardrobe and my home as well as my schedule.
Live joyfully because why not? Every day is precious. Why waste it on harbouring resentments. Let go and dance.
Live creatively because it is when making things or writing that I am happiest, yet it feels like an indulgence. It is one of the things that has always tended to fall to the end of my 'to do' list. So now I will honour it.
Live generously because through interacting with others generously we experience not only the joy of giving, but also the reciprocity of receiving. We connect with others, exchanging energy, and confirming our interconnectedness, so important when faced with the potential loneliness of something like cancer.
Live gratefully because there is so much to be thankful for. With this goes forgiveness. I am learning to forgive those people and situations that have hurt me, because in holding on to that hurt, I am hurting myself. Each morning now I wake and see a new day and feel gratitude for the newness, the opportunities that it brings.
By painting this and putting it on my wall, I am constantly reminded of the things that matter to me and encouraged to celebrate life - as I intend to continue doing for many, many more years.
