Hair envy

1 minute read time.

I am sporting the shortest haircut of my life. My hair continues to drift out, but today a friend complimented me on my new style and it turned out she genuinely liked it and was not simply being encouraging. The plus side is that, as an older woman, I usually have to spend some time checking my chin and upper lip for hairs, but those seem to have gone first. It's the little things that make a difference! I have my scarves and hats ready. My wig is trimmed and good to go, and suddenly I am aware of just how many people have a full head of hair! I find myself noticing women's hairstyles.  Perhaps, when my hair grows back, I shall treat myself to a whole new style. Certainly, when my mum saw my choice of wig, she thought it was time to ditch the natural white and go back to a younger style.

Meanwhile, my daughter has posted a photo of her latest wig on Facebook for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and I have found the courage to share her post, letting everyone know I am having treatment. Like everything, it needs to be talked about, and gradually I am letting people know that I am having cancer treatment, that the local services are fantastic and how well supported I am by the fantastic work of Macmillan and Tenovus.

Especially touching was a photograph my daughter sent of all her inlaws. The latest wig was seaweed and they had all decided to show their support by putting a pile of seaweed on their heads. To know so many people care (and are willing to put a smelly mound of bladderwrack and assorted beasties on their heads) helps carry me through.

I'm 18 months post chemo, all treatment done and dusted. Yes there are some little pluses - I have only shaved legs 3 times thus year 0 underarms. Eyebrows fine but are there. I loved my wig as did the family. Now got to the stage of being able to consider new hair style, but this time no perms or colour. All in all it's been quite liberating

    Hair envy...

It'seems 11 months since last chemo. My hair has presented curly and super soft-gray w some black. My aunt tells me to dye it. I have to admit you can see my eyebrows and lashes better since I added color. Color brought youthful appearance too!

    Is fun being reborn!

Thanks for the positive, encouraging comments. I have just come in from having given my head a good rub over the flower bed so my hair can help next year's flowers grow rather than end up in landfill.
