Day 1

1 minute read time.

Since Christmas I have had a great deal of pain passing stools. A trip to the doctor, an examination and diagnosis of piles. I was prescribed some suppositories. They didn't help, in fact for all the good they did I might has well shoved them up..........An old joke but it still makes me laugh.

Back to the GP who referred me to hospital. This time an examination diagnosed an anal fissure, The treatment was to be a botox injection to the relax the area and allow the fissure to heal. I was looking forward to telling friends that I'd had botox and waiting for the reaction 'Well you should get your money back as you're still as ugly'.

Yesterday I entered hospital to have the botox treatment. I left hospital 9 hours later having been diagnosed with rectal cancer.

My initial thoughts were not about me or my illness but how I would break the news to other people, Family, friends, work colleagues. Is this normal?

I have a positive attitude. I'm a glass half full type of person. Now my problem has a name I can move forward. I think all the not knowing has been worse.

The next step is to detect the severity of my cancer and whether it has spread, The doctor has said that I will require surgery but only after chemo and radio therapy.

I'll let you know how it goes.

Thanks for listening

Hi, Really sorry to hear your news. It's such a shock isn't it? Last year I went to have an endoscopy expecting that maybe I had a stomach ulcer only to be told that I had stomach cancer. My husband was with me when I got the news so I didn't have to tell him but I was worried about telling my family and friends. I told them the same day and they have been a great support during this past year. I am now cancer free and looking forward to a holiday in June. You will get good support on here as you will have days where you feel low and it's just great that you can come on here and read that other people are in a similar position and know exactly how you are feeling. You have a positive attitude and a sense of humour and it's important that you maintain this as I personally do feel that it helped me. Good luck with your upcoming investigations. Take care.
