Post-op Pain

Less than one minute read time.

The local anaesthetic wore off after about 8 hours as I'd been warned to expect and I woke often last night feeling pain.  This morning I've remembered I was advised not to be shy about taking painkillers so I'll see if paracetamol or ibuprofen will help.

The wound seems swollen but it's not bleeding, only weeping a bit.  I'll get some soft gauze stuff from the chemist similar to what the hospital used on top of the wound   They said I could use a sanitary towel if I want to but I think that would just feel more bulky.

Stitches need to be removed after 2 weeks, so I'll have to make an appointment with my GP's Practice Nurse for that.

I hate feeling that I'm defined by my medical condition; I hate hearing every conversation I'm in turn to medical stuff although talking about it does help reassure me and my family/friends

    Hi there,

Sorry you are in pain, but it is not surprising! I was told to take the painkillers regualarly so they build up the pain relief. Don't hesisitate as no prizes for martyrs and you heal quicker when not in pain.

Be careful that the gauze doesn't stick to the wound- you might be better with those non stick ones? Melolin i think they are called.

surprised no one is coming in to check on you.

People will change tack eventually... and if you are with friends just tell them how you are doing and then say, Right, I  want to hear all the gossip and no talk about me and my bits!

That usually does the trick (I have anal cancer so sometimes people wanted to avoid the topic anyway- how is your bum? crapped yourself much today? isn't really a good opening line eh? Though I have a daft sense of humour so would often be an opening line for me!

Hang on in there and hope you heal quickly.
