Mouth Ulcers

Less than one minute read time.

Morning to everyone,

Is there anyone out there who can reccommend something for mouth ulcers caused by radiotherapy???  Im 5 months + post treatment and my tongue now is the worst effected.    Tried lots of mouth washes, gels, bonjela, had loads from the hospital but to no avail, you dont realise how bad you feel when your tongue is ulcerated, i only have two one either side in the middle but god they are so sore and stop me from eating really!

Thank you in anticipation.

Love and Hugs

Jill

Hey, that sounds awful. After my first chemo my whole tongue and right down my throat was just ulcers...or one huge ulcer. I dunno what it was. It was horrible, i couldnt even drink, so i know your pain. I don't know about RT to the mouth cos it was chemo that did it to me.

With me, I found using sodium cholride, biotene and chlorhexidine mouth washes helped. Only use the chlorhexidine morning and night tho after brushing and after other mouthwashes. Its strong and may sting, but really really help in just a couple of days. I also found using gelclair really helped with pain.

I dunno if this will help you, but I find just really being really strict on your mothwashes (on time, after meals, not fogetting) helped me. x

Hi Jill, it's me again, just have to tell you that you really need to see your dentist as the RT side-effects,ie, Dry Mouth, causes all sorts of problems!

As you know, I'm 28 months post-treatment and I have just had treatment on two of my front, lower teeth, they had started to rot due to the dry mouth!!!!

My Dentist also wrote me a prescription for a high flouride toothpaste! Go into the Head and Neck Cancers forum for more information, there is two forums for head and neck cancer so make sure that you add an s at the end, lol!

    Take Care,big hugs,

Also, sorry to be back again. Does radiotherapy effect your mouth the same as chemo in that it kills your healthy cells that clean your mouth? Because in that case, my nurse told me to try pineapple. It really does help as it's a natural cleanser for the mouth. If fresh pineapple is too bitter, you could try juice. x

absolutely right, natural pineapple, its a natural antiseptic of the mouth and sooo soothing. But keep it in a tin, keep in the fridge (has to be in natural juice) then its ice cold on the mouth and it brings down the inflammation. hope this helps,
