Hair today, gone tomorrow

Less than one minute read time.

Funny week so far. i'n feeling much better and able to most things I want to do, but looming in the back of my mind is the 2nd treatment due next monday. I think that it is harder to go in for the second dose as I now know how ill I'm going to be.

My hair is steadly falling out. It is also hurting at the roots. I got my hairdressor to cut it quite short and he featherd it around the edges. It looks OK. If I pull at it quite a lots comes out and this morning I manage to block the plughole whislt showering. (Nice job fishing it out - not.) I'm not sure how long it will be until it has all gone:(

I came back this evening to 15 missed calls. Later the doctors receptionist called me to tell me they had been trying to get hold of me and they had booked me in for a repeat blood test tomorrow. To cut a long story, evenually the duty doctor called me, because my white blood count was so low. (He didn't realise I was on Chemo.) Panic over.

    Hi Tiger

This may be a little late . . .  try putting one of those little sieves in the plug hole!  I found it was a great help, as was wearing a heavy duty hairnet at night, so that I didn't wake up to a bed full of hair!  Your comments about your roots hurting brought back memories for me - no one tells you how painful it might be!  I gather that only 50% of people suffer pain on losing their hair - we were just unlucky!  On a lighter note, I was surprised how quickly my hair grew back after chemo - and it's really thick now and in beautiful condition, never having been coloured/straightened/overheated!

Hope your second lot of chemo goes well - are you on carbo/taxol?  I used to console myself with the thought that if I were being ill, the chemo must be doing its job!

    Good luck for Monday

    Hugs, Kate xx

HI, my hiar is growing back now. I remember the pain tooand the hair loss. I did get a really fab wig, which I am still wearing. My hairdresser ordered it and cut it for me. She was trained by Trevor Sorbie. The website is www.mynewhair.org it gave me the confidence to go out and about and back to work. It was so good I got another one in a different colour. Hair does grwo back quickly.

    Take care Tiger xx

i shaved mine completely.. its less traumatic than watching it all go down the plug hole... i know its tempting to TRY to hold on to it a little longer but once i got over the fact that it was gone i just got on with it.... i cut up one of the wigs and sewed them into baseball caps.... and done that for a while... but mostly i just went "g.i. jane" i am a hairdresser and so is my daughter she shaved it for me, it will grow back, i found having no eyelashes and eyebrows worse than no hair... i know strange eh? i drew on my eyebrows with a brown eyeshadow... much better than a pencil as its softer and not as obvious

    good luck with your treatment

    Hiya Tiger

I too had horrible pain when my hair fell out, but got a great steroid liquid from the GP called Betnomethasate, I think - it got rid of the pain instantly.

I can confirm Kate has terrific hair and will be seeing her soon to reconfirm this!

All the best with your chemo.  Once it's over, in many ways it's a rebirth - lots of nice, as opposed to vile, milestones, including the incredible thrill of your hair regrowing!
