Slow Release Pain Relief

2 minute read time.
Now 0130hrs and am just waiting for PEG feed to force down a few more millilitres so I can tick another portion off my nutrition list. Switched to long lasting pain relief yesterday evening. Good news is that the tablet offers 12 hours pain relief, therefore in theory that could equal twelve hours unbroken sleep. Bad News is that due to its nature it can only come in tablet form and must be taken orally. Considering I struggled with some cream of chicken soup the other day forcing a tablet down (even though it is not a very big one) proved to be a massive effort, especially as throat is still very sore and tender following yesterday's sick session... Still it had to be done and in the midst of my daily gargling/ meads intake I got the pill down into the belly. Up to bed I went, read for twenty minutes and then felt the eyelids dropping, this seemed too good to be true. I nodded off to the whirring of my tube feeder (now up to over 200 ml/hour and increasing slowly each night) the time was 9.30pm - feed due to finish about 2am. And sleep I did, uninterrupted with lots of dreams and woke up feeling quite refreshed. I checked the clock and could not believe my eyes, it read 2138hrs? Either I had miraculously slept for 24 hours and 8 minutes or as was the case just 8 mins. Still, sleep is sleep, and pain free sleep is even better, so I nodded off again. Again seemed like for he's but was only for 12 minutes? This has continued until 1am ( and about 20 small stints of sleep). I don't feel tired, am not in too much pain so thought why not complete an early blog post today whilst waiting for feed to finish, and then hopefully get some decent sleep until morning ( in hopefully more than just 10 minute blocks). Today will mark session #23 and will be half way through this block of 6. With only 8 more sessions left I am truly on the downward slope regarding treatment. Big hurdle later today though and got a meeting with dietitian. I am hoping I haven't had a similar weight loss as last week as that could mean a new mask being measured and fitted and a new schedule of treatments being set up which will cause delay to my end date of treatments. My father in law offered me sound advice and told me to put gravel in my socks for the weigh in! This time next week will be Christmas Day, and the best prezzie for me is a couple of days of no treatment in midweek. We r just about set up for Xmas in the house now, I just need to get out and buy a couple of presents for my nearest and dearest. Anyway, tube feed almost complete, quick flush through and then some sleep, I may blog later if not too tired, I hope I find my phone in the car....

Hi Dave.  Re your tablet problem.  This may not be appropriate for your particular medication so please check first -  but I was given the tip by the nurses to break the end off an icepop and put the tablet into that.  It is then much easier to swallow.  Be warned , it is very messy as you have to let the icepop melt a bit.

Gravel into socks!  Wish I'd thought of that one.  I can recommend heavy shoes and bulky fleece jackets.  Also if you make sure you have a full stomach that can help, so have the liquid feed and plenty of water before weigh-in!  x

    Hi Dave

Wow you really do sound brave!  My other half is currently lying in hospital having lost his secondary liver cancer (we hope).

Keep it up, sounds like you will soon be heaving sighs of relief.  I had to go back to your first blog and think maybe you could get published!!

    Will check out tomorrow.

    Take care. Bev
