Baby Steps

1 minute read time.
As recovery continues all I seem to do is sleep, take meds, sleep, take meds, sleep, take meds... Until this afternoon when I thought, sod it, I am going to attempt a small cup of dark tea. Bearing in mind I have not had anything to drink except sips of cold water since the end of October this was going to be something special or something vile. I made the half brew, with half a sugar, half strength and half the heat of a proper cuppa. I settled back, placed the cup to my lips, tipped back and swallowed a quarter mouthful. It actually tasted somewhat of tea but immediately I felt like coughing up phlegm, which I duly did. Another mouthful, another coughing up at least it was shifting the mucus which is a good thing. So that is another thing to add to my daily routine now. I had a nice strawberry milkshake via tube ( I looked at it longingly, wishing I could down it in one by mouth - this would have been a step too soon, too far for now though - one day!). I slept much better last night and did not need any additional pain relief - the slow release of 30 mg of morphine over 24 hours seems to be enough to keep me going. District Nurse visited on time today and recharged the syringe driver without incident. Will soon be knocking on the 2014 Door, which 6 weeks ago seemed sooooooo far away. That is when my baby steps towards recovery will start to get bigger and stronger and my mouth and feeding habits can return to some sort of normality. Until then I thank my wife and family for their continued day to day support, and the close friends who continue to provide words of encouragement at such a busy time of the year.
