A Week To Forget...

2 minute read time.
Back into Hospital. Another bug picked up while defences down and admitted to hospital last Sunday (always happens at a weekend) to be on the safe side. Back to the chaotic organisation surrounding southampton hospital. Put in a holding bay initially where the nurse offered a range of alternative mouth rinses, each tasted as horrible as the next. Then the good news, they had found me my own ensuite room. I was scuttled by bed to find the room with a few teething difficulties. It was right outside ward D3 reception (as noisy as Waterloo Railway Station at shift handover). As I grew accustomed to my new surroundings , broken clock, no personal light (bulb broken), toilet roll holder broken! It took 40 mins before a member of staff even said "hello can I help you?". First drama then of finding some food to go through my pump. "Sorry Sir it doesn't seem to be on prescription!". This is the same hospital that I walked out of the pharmacy with two weeks worth of the stuff a week earlier! Consultancy team confirmed that I may had caught an infection and that I was in pain. A restless and long night followed on which I clung on to the doctors words that we are talking days to starting to get better now and not weeks. Mid mon morning and groundhog day of the smell, taste and feeling of illness took over. Soon to be stopped though by fact I had to change to a 6 man bay and give up my relative tranquility once settled (I didn't bother introducing myself to my roomies as before and just stuck to gargling and spitting up phlegm!). Shock then (shudnt have surprised me) as my new medication nurse had not passed on any of my notes. Then spent next hour going through it all again. No sleep hardly last night due to noise of a shared and broken room! So, up early to the breakfast rounds (I sipped some water as others tucked into their porridge) and into a day of constant beeping, calls for nursing assistance and boredom. Was given some surgical stockings this afternoon - not too sure how they will help a sore throat, they have just made my toes cold! Just seen doc - no release today, tomorrow earliest poss even Thursday! Now friday and finally been told I can go home today (even though last night was best nights sleep I have had in hospital). Can't wait to get back to my own bed...

Hello Dave ... to echo Julia's comment ' what a nightmare ' ! I do hope that you will recover sooner now that you are back to your home comforts.

Hospitals aren't the best of places for peace and quiet are they ? Reminds me of when I was in after my operation ... a lady reacted strangely to the anaesthetic and she deliberately set the fire alarm off in the early hours. The only bonus was seeing the burly firemen checking the bays ... : )

Take care and keep your chin up, pet.

Hi Dave.  Sorry to read all about what you have been going through.  I remember all the noise and constant disruptions when I was in hospital, the first night back in the peace and quiet of my own bed was bliss.  Have a good rest when you get home and I do hope you are feeling a bit better soon.  Take care. x
