Helpless

1 minute read time.

Kenny has just completed 5 weeks of Radiotherapy Treatment and Chemotherapy, with the hope that the tumour in his gullet will have shrunk.  Consultant told us at the start that it would be unlikely to be operable, but the treatment would prevent it spreading and would contain it.  That was a shock.  We had always thought that the treatment would allow the surgeons to remove the tumour which had spread through the wall of the gullet and was close to the heart.  We have come to terms with the fact that operating may not be an option.  I have read a lot of posts on this site from people who have had the tumour removed, and I had really hoped that Kenny would be one of them.  So what's the future for him?  More chemo and RT?  How do you live with a cancer which you can't remove?  So many questions.

I feel very helpless to know what to think and I feel like our world has been turned upside down.  I am so scared of the future.  The RT treatment and the chemo have been hard and Kenny sleeps most of the time, has no appetite or energy.  But he still manages to make me laugh when he tries.  I feel so sorry for him and wish we could get our life back together again.

It helps me to share this and to read the experiences of others on this site.  It is a good support and a good way to know that you are not alone.

6 weeks till scans to show the result of the treatment.  Staying hopeful, is all we can do.

Love to you all

    Hi Sheena,

I sorry to hear about Kenny, I hope after the 6weeks are up that there will be an improvement, and the tumour will have started to shrink. No 2 tumours are the same. Im afraid you are into the waiting game which is the worst part of the treatment. But keep

your chin up. Give Kenny my regards.

Take care and be safe Big Hugs Love Sarsfield.xx

Thanks for replying to my blog.  Read your biography and you certainly have been through the wars.  Interested to see you are a fellow Scot.  My mum was from Ayr and my dad from Prestwick.  My Grandpa lived in Ayr all his life after leaving the army.  He worked at Prestwick Airport.  I have fond memories of walks on Ayr beach and visits to Alloway.  Kenny's treatment has involved trips to the Beatson Cancer Centre, which is now part of Gartnavel as you probably know.  I also remember visiting my Grandpa in Crosshouse hospital.

Good to hear from a fellow Scot!

    Hi Sheena

My husband Tom also has inoperable OC which was diagnosed 19 mths ago he has had chemo and rt and he had a stent put in about 3 mths ago he has fought this disease every step of the way and up until the last few days  has never said anything negative, but he always wanted quality of life and now he feels he is not getting it,but he was only given 6 mths at the beginnig and up to now ha an extra 13mths so I am keeping my fingers crossed for  kenny that the tumour w ill have shrunk and he can maybe start eating a little again. Before the stent he lived on soup, hot chocolate and smoothies a really good way to get the calories in.

I will be thinking of you both
