Try going for a walk.  Sit on a higher chair.  Go to the library.  All that bending and stretching to the top and bottom shelves often makes things happen.

Just make sure you know where to go if you feel things moving.  You might not want any sudden surprises.

I really do understand your problem.  After my op and dire hospital food, I didn't go for a week, and my GP got very twitchy about it.

When I was a student nurse I used to wonder what all the fuss was about recording when people moved their bowels etc - how nieive was I - only after my first chemo and I suffered constipation for myself did I realise how miserable it can be!! Anyway things to help - drinking extra fluids can help - warm drinks encourage peristalsis (the wave movement in the walls of the bowel. I use milled flaxseed which you can get in the healthfood section of Tescos (in a foil pouch) - its a fine powder which you sprinkle on your cereal in the morning - 2 dessertspoons usually works - might take a couple of days but everyone I have told about this remedy swears by it now !! (including my MAc Nurse !!) It is nicest if you mix it wih yoghurt - but on chemo yoghurt isnt recommended but the type of yoghurt that isnt 'live' is ok - these are the youhurts which don't need to be kept in the fridge. Anyway good luck and yes keep moving too!! Love Jools xx

Hi Sharon, I totally agree with you re the constipation, not nice at all, I'm on 2 different kinds of meds, one makes me constipated and the other gives me the runs, you'd think they would cancel each other out but oh no.  The best thing I find to use is Dulcolax, most supermarkets and chemists have it, you dont need to ask for it either, its just on the shelf.   Take one or 2 before you go to bed at night and it should help you have a "clear out" the following morning.  If you take 2 then you will probably get a really sore stomach as well just to make u aware but first time taking it then one should do.

Hope you get things moving soon, Lou xx

Lots of fruit does it for me, It's lovely at the moment with plums, nectarines ,figs all available but why no yoghurt ? I never heard that.

    good luck!

hi, i never realised that i could get so obsessed with my bowels after the first few days of chemo. I take the usual lactulose, senna, fruit etc and what actually ends up working for me seems to be a cup of coffee. Not sure thats the healthiest option but it certainly seems to do the trick for me. Good luck.
