Today is a big date in the Macmillan calendar. It’s our annual flagship fundraiser: World’s Biggest Coffee Morning! Our incredible supporters have been holding Coffee Mornings all over the country today, and we’ve been out and about lending a hand and saying thank you to the generous hosts. In this blog, senior editor Tess gives a round-up of what we’ve been up to for World’s Biggest Coffee Morning 2017.
Our team kicked off our Coffee Morning fundraising early this year, by holding a Great British Bake-off sweepstake. We’ve been bringing in bakes from each week’s episode and selling them to our colleagues to raise money. We can’t agree on who’ll win the show (my money’s on Steven), but Senior Editor Sarah’s winning our sweepstake so far with the caramel and apple muffins she made during caramel week!
Editor Elissia and Editorial Assistant Liza spent the morning at University College Hospital in London. They were at the Coffee Morning being run by the amazing staff at the Macmillan Cancer Information Centre. They took a treats trolley round to the visitors and patients at the hospital and were blown away by people’s generosity.
Editor Steven went to a Coffee Morning being run by M&S in Sutton. The staff were all in green Macmillan T-shirts and wigs (and animal onesies), busy selling cakes and collecting money.
Editorial Manager Selina and Senior Editor Sarah were at the Coffee Morning at King’s College Hospital in London this morning. They got stuck in serving cake and selling raffle tickets.
We’ve even been dragging our family and friends into the fundraising this year – here’s Nurse Maria’s daughter getting involved at their Coffee Morning in Glasgow. We’re especially impressed by their balloon-modelling skills.
Editorial Assistant Amy-Louise went to help out at the Coffee Morning being held by Calvary Temple UPC in London. There was a huge turnout, and Amy-Louise made a speech thanking everyone and explaining where their generous donations will go.
And those of us who couldn’t get out and about today still had our own Coffee Morning in the office. We’ve sold sweet treats to colleagues to enjoy with their morning coffee. And we admit that they weren’t all homemade….
In 2016, the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning raised £29.5 million for Macmillan – and we’re hoping to beat that this year. The money raised will help Macmillan be there for everyone affected by cancer. It will fund nurses, the Macmillan support line, cancer support centres in hospitals, and of course our information. It will make sure people have the support they desperately need when they’re going through the toughest time of their life. So a huge thank you to everyone who attended or hosted a Coffee Morning this year!
