Out and about for World’s Biggest Coffee Morning 2013

3 minute read time.

It’s fair to say we’re fans of cake and sweet treats in the Cancer Information Development team. So the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning always has a special spot on our calendar. Not only is it a chance to enjoy some tasty bites along with a hot beverage, but we get to support Macmillan at the same time.

This clever combination is probably why it's the charity's biggest fundraiser. After a record £15million was raised in 2012, this year’s Macmillan coffee morning has already raised £16.5million!

Members of our team went to various events on 27 September, so here’s what some of us got up to...

Cancer Content Developer Graham Pembrey went along to the Macmillan Information Centre at King’s College Hospital:

‘The Mayor of Lambeth turned up to meet staff and judge the cakes. My role was to direct people towards the coffee and cakes (a tough job!). It was a great chance to meet some dedicated Macmillan volunteers and the staff who run the information centre.’

Gen, our Cancer Content Coodinator, went along to two events.

First, it was off to a garden party hosted by Macmillan volunteer Peggy. Peggy's event raised an incredible £1,160.

She then popped along to Barclays on Fulham Road, where they expected to raise around £500.

Gen also received some lovely pictures from Language Connect, who translate our information into different languages. They raised £82.

Our head of department, Anna Leibowitz, made it along to four coffee mornings, including a local school, a coffee shop and local branches of our corporate partners, Barclays and Nationwide.

Maggie Walsh, one of our information development nurses, went along to a coffee morning in Elstead, Surrey, which was hosted by another Maggie. She was running the event in memory of her husband Doug, who died from bowel cancer earlier this year.

Our Maggie also went along to Nuffield Health in Guildford, where they host a coffee morning every year. This year’s event raised £500.

Editorial Assistant Debbie joined forces with her pal Lucy (Senior Communications and PR Officer at Macmillan). They were obviously feeling thirsty, as they made it to five events in north London, including three branches of Barclays, a Coffee Republic and a NatWest.

Not only that, but they bumped into local MP Lynne Featherstone and ended up on her Facebook page!

Senior Editor Sarah went along to a coffee morning hosted by our Quality and Improvement Lead, Abi, who is currently on maternity leave. Baby Charlotte, possibly our youngest supporter at four weeks, even dressed in a green t-shirt for the occasion.

Bev, who edits our magazine for Macmillan professionals, Mac Voice, went along to the Cancer Centre at University College Hospital.

‘I wanted to combine my first Macmillan coffee morning with a visit to one of our fantastic services. It is also a very busy one, so the cake and coffees were served thick and fast!’
