An intern at Macmillan – Holly

2 minute read time.

Below, our lovely intern Holly writes about her time at Macmillan.

Having been an intern with Macmillan for the past 12 weeks, my time here is sadly drawing to an end. I've been working within the Cancer Information Development team, who produce and edit information for people affected by cancer.

I have completed a couple of internships before, but Macmillan has definitely been the most rewarding experience for me. The organisation places a huge emphasis on personal development, and I've had so much support to develop my skills.

On my first day, my intern manager Emma asked me what I wanted to achieve during my time here. One of my personal goals was to become proficient in using the publishing software InDesign. Therefore my internship has been tailored to help me achieve this aim, and I’ve had lots of regular meetings to ensure I’ve been happy with the progress.

Some of the projects I have been involved with include:

All of these tasks have helped me to develop some invaluable transferrable skills, which will now help me in the next stage of my career.

I have been so impressed by the scale of this charity. Macmillan really does offer so much practical and emotional support to people affected by cancer, as well as the palliative care aspect.

Even though it has only been for 12 weeks, I have really settled in here and felt valued by my colleagues. For anyone thinking of applying to the internship scheme, I would definitely recommend it – you will meet some lovely people and really enhance your CV.  I have now been offered a job within a communications role elsewhere, and I genuinely feel that my experience from Macmillan has helped me to achieve this.

Thank you to the Cancer Information Development team for an inspiring 12 weeks!
