2016 MacTakeover

3 minute read time.

In this blog, our editorial assistant Amy-Louise shares some snaps and stats about our Macmillan Takeover day.

Yesterday over 440 members of Macmillan staff helped to light London green for our annual Mac Takeover day. This is an annual event where the Metropolitan Police allow Macmillan staff the opportunity to fundraise across the streets of London – buckets, tins, wigs, costumes and smiles galore. Victoria, Soho, Euston, you name it, we made our mark.

We had an absolutely brilliant day, and loved hearing all of the wonderful stories that the public had to share about how Macmillan had helped them. It always amazes us year upon year just how generous people can be and we really appreciate everyone who stopped to pop a donation into our buckets and tins, no matter how big or small.

We thought you might be interested to see just how far the money that you donate to Macmillan could go, so there are some statistics for you:

  • 36p could pay for a copy of The cancer guide. This Macmillan booklet can help someone recently diagnosed with cancer, and their families, understand more about cancer, its treatment, and the help available.

  • £2 could keep a typical Macmillan information and support centre stocked with all the information resources it needs to support people affected by cancer for an hour. These resources would include booklets, guides, directories and leaflets.

  • Every £10 we spend on our phone service could lead to our cancer support specialists helping people affected by cancer claim £347 in benefits they are entitled to.

  • £15 could pay for a Macmillan social worker or family support worker for an hour. They work with community and social services agencies to help people manage the social and practical problems of living with cancer.

  • £24 could pay for a person to receive quality information and support from our Mobile Information and Support team – either with our mobile centres or through a wide range of community, college and workplace visits.

  • £28 could pay for a Macmillan nurse for an hour, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support.

  • £39 could pay for our Macmillan Support Line phone service to deal with one enquiry via phone or email.

  • £50 could pay for a speaker to deliver a talk (for example, about cancer symptom management) to a self-help and support group.

As you can see, all of the pennies and notes that you donate all add up to help people affected by cancer get the best support they can.

Here are some pictures from the day – look out for our adorable dalmatians Elissia and Sarah!

Green bucket, check. Green wig, check. Green t-shirts, check.

Our editorial assistants Amy-Louise and Faiza taking over from content manager Tracy.

Faiza and Amy-Louise were joined by one of our editors Steven for the third shift of the day.

And then... who let the dogs out? Editor Elissia and content developer Sarah added some black and white spots to the sea of green.

The last, but by no means least, shift of the day was covered by Neil, one of our content channel editors and Steven, who just couldn't get enough!

A big thank you to anyone who donated yesterday, or gave us some encouragement. We'll be back out on the streets next year in all our green finery!
